What wedges do you use?
Ive been given £60 from the wife to spend on a wedge as currently i use a standard Sand wedge and pitching wedge. I like the look of the titleist vokey wedges and the cleveland zip groove wedges but wanted to know what wedge you use? and what wedges you would recommend. I take a shallow divot so I think I low bounce angele is best.

I did a lot of looking into this last year and ended up with Cleveland CG14. Next was the Ping Tour. I really didn't like the Vokey's.
I suggest lots of trial and error as you would with any other club until you find your favourite.

Lee,
have had a 56' vokey for about 5 years & out of sand & tight lies it is superb.

Couldn't go far wrong with the MD Superstrong or Norman Drews...
All got spin milled faces for loads of grip

I'd second the Taylormade Z TP - I have one in 60* and it works well with the low bounce (6*).

Is that why I use Callaways, I wondered why. It is because I am old. Thanks Paul.

I have many wedges , sadly can't use any of them properly.
I have seen the Vokeys for sale for £49 that must be a consideration for such a proven wedge.

I have a pair of Mizuno Raw Haze wedges, 53 & 60 degree.
Bought them from an online retailer and they were £29.99 each.
A bargain as they were £70 when I was looking at them in American Golf.

Old mans clubs for me, Callaway X 14's with PW, AW and SW. All extremely accurate.

I had Callaway wedges for while and hated the sole on them so i went to Titleist vokey and they are superb. I am all one for a change and i have now got Taylor Made z groove as i really like the look of them. The head shape is traditional although i do fear that the grooves will be banned in the future.

It is a gap wedge, Paul, in my case 52 degrees.

Also refered to as an Attack Wedge.

I've got a 58* CG14 Lee. I've got the two-dot bounce (normal) but you may prefer the one-dot. If you haven't parted with your cash by the N v S you're welcome to give it a try.

Funny this thread has re-appeared now, just played two rounds today and hit one duff shot with my MD wedge, and I used it quite a bit. From 50 yds out down to 10yd pops over bunkers it just worked beautifully. Unfortunately the one duff shot was on hole 36 when all I needed was a par to beat Martin M.....

I own numerous wedges but 'In the Bag' is a "Go" 52* and one of my "Hippo's", the 56*. My Hippo 60* WAS in my Bag until my daughter jacked it last week.

I cannot say enough about my new two nike sv 56 and 60 wedges. Very stiff shafts but accurate is not the word. Give them a go. I bought them from a discount sports shop in Leeds £105 the pair though I think they sell at £80 a piece.

Patrick,
Do you hope to make a few Eagles with them?

Can't remember the last time I had an eagle David though I've been putting for one on the last four rounds at Moorallerton 5 th.

Are you carrying the water or running it round?
Was the discount store on Street Lane? or Harehills Lane?
Reply : Tue 2nd Jun 2009 17:59
Sorry taking so long to reply: I'm carrying the water but last Sunday wind was against and went in with a 3 iron (should have gone to the left) and found water for the first time.
The shop is soccer sports on Headrow. Some bargains to be had.

I'll have to have a look, is it the one on the corner of Dortmund Square (ex JJB).
I look in Direct Golf (on-line) and have trips to Eagle Golf on Harehills Lane and American Golf on Street Lane. I know most of the lads in Eagle from the old days.

Orderd myself a Nike Tour SV 56' yesterday to replace my tired looking vokey.
Will let you know how it plays.

There used to be a guy who played with us who had a fine set of leather wedges until we caught him and kicked him out.

I find it amazing that the easiest club in the bag to hit, is causing all these problems.
Why are we not hearing about how difficult the nine iron is?
Reply : Tue 9th Jun 2009 20:39
44 deg PW is very strong, mine is a 48, so I can see how you hit it a long way, Dan.
I would say that with that strong a pitching wedge it is going to be difficult to get the wedges you would need to keep the consistency of degree between each wedge. 44 to 53 is a huge gap in my opinion. I have four degrees between each of my wedges, 48,52,56 and 60.
If you are mis-hitting it in an attempt to take something off it suggest you are going the wrong way about taking power off. You are probably quitting in an attempt at not hitting it too hard, when in actual fact the swing should be the same as normal but at a marginally slower pace. Short backswings and short follow throughs are very difficult to do when wanted as they tend to make one snatch, even though I quite often play this kind of shot myself. Just a thought.

i have the vokey 56 and 60, fantastic clubs, great spin.
Reply : Wed 10th Jun 2009 09:06
If I need to take some distance off a club I hold it down the shaft a bit then make the same swing. Normal 54° goes 110 for me, 2" down the shaft and it goes 100. It means I carry only 3 wedges 48°, 54° and 60° but plenty of distance variations holding 1-4" down the shaft.
Personally I have never been successful at swinging slower to reduce distance, never been able to get the feel for it (I am a hitter not a swinger to my detriment).

Andrew, you have a system that works for you and that is all that matters. I sometimes go down the shaft for certain shots I wish to play.
Reply : Thu 11th Jun 2009 16:13
I use a Vokey S200 52 degree gap wedge and a spin milled 56 degree sand wedge. I prefer the non spin milled face on the gap wedge so I can play little bump and run shots and have no worry about the spin milled face making the ball bite.
I did like the MD superstrong but picked up both Vokeys for under £50 a piece so could not pass them up been a great investment and are a in my opinion a real quality club.

Dan,
I use XD's and the 44 degree PW is strong which does limit your options. However, as they do an R7 XD AW 49 degree and 54 SW, this gives 5 degrees between each which should get you about 110-115 out of the AW and 85-100 out of SW. I use them and they are a great addition to the set.
