Hogan's Mystique

Best Hogan comp I've seen - some of the slow motion swings are great quality givn their age, and you can trace his ball flight perfectly.

All golfers were swingers, in that era, Paul.

Why is it a rarity, Paul,I think it is because they are now all highly tuned/strung athletes with a greater emphasis on power as opposed to fluency and timing.

With the courses being lengthend all the time, to cater for the Pros, then it is important that one hits the ball a long way. Unfortunately this has spolied the enjoyment for the vast majority of the players in the world who now cannot reach these greens in regulation figures.

And it's called London, written by James Newton Howard.  Any points?

as a reply to mr pettitt, the games played more through the air these days, some of the pros drives dont come down till after they've reached 300yds, to my knowledge, which is limited, old school drives had a higher ratio of run to carry, iv seen pros hit drivers/3 woods that land as soft as my wedges

The modern players still manage to get a lot of run on the ball, it all depends on the course. Watch a few of the drives at the Masters and you will see a lot of run. Drivers and 3 woods will only stop on receptive surfaces, don 't think for one moment that a pro can stop a driver on any putting surface. They struggle somtimes, even with an iron.

The reason you get the inprtession that the game is played through the air these days is because courses have been designed to accept the high shot as the only option. Bunkers across the front of greens, water hazards right up to the greens edge.

The modern game survives only because of the paying public and the TV revenue, so it has become  more favourable to have the pros scoring well to attract the audiences. After all no one wants to see pros struggling on courses that are just plain difficult, with rough that one cannot take a thre iron from. Put them on a course like Saunton and then see what the field could do. After a few lost balls the paranoia would set in and they would be reduced to taking irons off the tee. When they realised that the mid iron to a green is going to bound off the back they would quickly realise that they have been spoiled with the modern USGA spec and that they do not have the game to play courses like this.

This has taken away the many types of shot the old masters were capable of doing, especially when greens where firmer.

Because of these changes in golf course design it has reduced the golf swing to  mechanical shot making, with everything aimed at the green. Add in the prefect greens of todays tour and it becomes obvious why there are so many players scoring well.
