Write up from Winter League event at Doncaster
Winter League – Round 4 – Doncaster
In total, 34 players turned out for the latest round of the winter league, with us once again being blessed with the weather, with no rain but a slight breeze. Considering the course was under snow less than two weeks ago, it was in great condition.
The layout meant there were many holes which allowed you to build a good score, but with dangers waiting for a bad shot. No holes were the same, with bunkers having a steep face, meaning a visit to one on the fairway took the green out of range for the next shot, unless you were very lucky.
After meeting up for coffee and bacon rolls in a very impressive and well laid out club house (great balcony overlooking the 1st tee and 18th green), 8 4-balls went out with a last group of 2. The match was played off full handicaps for the individual prizes, plus a AM-AM team event for each 4-ball. In addition, we had trophies for the nearest the pin and the longest drive.
I think i speak for all, that the course was a great challenge for all handicaps, although in think many of us wish we had laid up on some holes, rather than going for it!
Being in the last group, i did not see too much of other groups games, apart from James hitting a tree less than three feet in front of him on the 10th! Thanks James, it cheered me up no end.
The first prize of the day went to Tony Dunn on the 6th, when he got his tee shot to 9ft of the pin, beating Russ Barber by 9 inches! I have to say, having the flag stick as an extended graduated range pole made confirmation very easy, otherwise it might have been too close to call between Russ Barber and Tony.
The second prize of the day went to Darren Millichip for the longest drive up the 18th. This was a good choice for the longest drive, as those that had completed could stand on the balcony and watch the drives come up the last hole.
The team event consisted of the best two scores on each hole from each team being recorded to make a team score for the hole. Being in the last group as a two ball, with our pairing scoring 37 and 34 points, i thought our total score of 71 would be a good result. How wrong i was!
The winners were those in group 7, who amassed a total score of 104 points between them! After Tim’s incident last match, putting the yellow ball into the lake on the second hole, it was fitting justice that he hit back and ended up on the winning team.
The full team results were as follows;
Group 1 Martin Millichip Mark Whitefield Graham Kirk AM-AM Score = 80 points John Flynn Group 2 Daniel Buckley Russ Barber Ian Suttie AM-AM Score = 86 points Tim Buffham Group 3 Dan Higgins John Spencer Richard Cockerham AM-AM Score = 91 points Leslie Barnard Group 4 Darren Millichip Tony Dunn Robbie Alison AM-AM Score = 87 points Bob White Group 5 Nigel Cuyler Neil Beech Gary Cartlidge AM-AM Score = 96 points Malcolm Fell Group 6 John Wheatley Mark Hunnybell Len Potts AM-AM Score = 88 points Antony Horne Group 7 Stuart Laws Tim Hawkins James Illsley AM-AM Score = 104 points James Morgan Group 8 Lee Booth Ron Potts Keith Guest AM-AM Score = 86 Points Paul Heath Group 9 Allan Bostock Neil Richardson AM-AM Score = 71 pointsAs for the individual prizes, there were some great scores posted. Third place was Malcolm Fell with 39 points, second was Nigel Cuyler with 40 points, but top bandit of the day was Dan Higgins, with a truly great score of 43 points. Having played with Dan at College Pines the week before, i know he is not a bandit, but still deserves the ‘bandit’ title for 43 points! Other scores which were impressive for their own reasons, was Tim’s score of 38 points, just missing out in 4th place, Les’s score of 29 points which was a great improvement on previous scores posted. Keep up the good work Les, its getting there.
For me, i thought i was in with a shout with 37 points, although with only 20 points after 12 holes, i was glad just to get to a total of 37! This was made even better, by events on the last hole.
Myself and Neil Richardson ended up in the left hand bunker for 2, with Richard suggesting a side bet of a tenner, for who could get the bunker shot nearest to the pin. Going first, and proceeding to hole the bunker shot for a birdie (the cheer from the balcony was much appreciated), put Richard off somewhat as he then proceed to two putt for a bogie 5 to finish on.

It wasn't just any old tree Al, it had a 2 inch wide trunk. It takes a great deal of skill to hit one of those slap bang in the middle I'll have you know!
