Interesting Golf Facts

Posted by: user20126 [FORUM MODERATOR] | Sat 21st Feb 2009 22:03 | Last Reply

I've read somewhere that 85% of the world's golfers fade/slice a ball.

Do you know any interesting golf facts?

I'd like to know how many golfers in the world are scratch or better, also how many are single figure golfers, etc?

So have you heard/read any?

Russ

The acceleration of the clubhead during impact can exceed 4,000gs (compared to less than 10gs for a jet fighter pilot in a high speed manoeuvre).

When Margaret Thatcher moved into 10 Downing Street to take up her Prime Ministership the first thing that was moved in was her husband Dennis' golf clubs. Upon which point The Iron Lady remarked "that's right you play golf dear, and I'll go on and run the country".

Dennis' golf bag remained in the foyer of number 10 for the entire time she held office.

I thought that was a great remark. Kind of thing my wife would say to me.

My brother told me that 90% of golfers never break 90.  Of those who do break 90, 90% wont break 80 and of those that break 80 90% will never shoot below 70.  Dunno if it's true, but it's got a kind of symmetry about it.

NB: there are 333 dimples on a Srixon AD333

Tim, that's the kind of thing I was after.

If what you put is true, can you imagine that of all the golfers in the world 90% of them would never break 90.

And I would say about 20% of them would not break 100

Keep them coming guys.

You are maybe forgetting, David, that the North may be able to recruit all these plus and scratch golfers from across the border that have recently joined the site.

I am quite sure that you are right about that, Paul. I can imagine the Pro with no name to suddenly become an amateur playing off 15, just to get a result.

With the way I am playing I probably should have given my place to someone more capable, but then I thought, I support the Golfshake website and it is always nice to meet up with friends. The result is unimportant, just provides banter rights for a year.

The World’s Longest Golf Course is the International Golf Club in Massachusetts, a long par 77, 8325-yards, from the tiger tees.

The World's Highest Golf Course is the Tactu Golf Club in Morococha, Peru, which sits 14,335 feet above sea level at its lowest point.

The Longest Hole in the World is the 7th hole (par 7) of the Sano Course at the Satsuki Golf Club in Japan. It measures a long 909 yards.

The World's Largest Bunker is Hell's Half Acre on the 585-yard 7th hole of the Pine Valley Course in New Jersey.

Dont know if these are true though....

I am sure they are all true, but I feel the modern game is being dicated by the power of the now very athletic young pros, when in actual fact the pros are a minority of those who play this game. It would be nice if courses were designed for the majority of players who play them, not just for the elite few. It appears that the premium requirement has changed from accuracy to just sheer brute force.

TITLEIST 384 TOUR from the 80's. Dimples that is.

A Golf Ball CAN be bigger than 1.68" but not heavier than 1.62 ounces avoidupois, which the older golfers will know was the same figure as the size of the old British Golf Ball.
