South Winchester Golf Club
Tomorrow I am going to attempt to play my first game since my knee operation. I have been assured that Buggies will be OK tomorrow at the club.
If by some freak chance it rains sufficiently for buggies to be banned then I will attempt to walk round but use my playing partners clubs.
I will give a nice prize to any golfshake member who can predict my gross score exactly tomorrow.

Good luck tomorrow John, I know you've been through it over the past few months.
Gross score? 86...

I would be delighted with that, Dennis, but somehow I think I may struggle.
Reply : Thu 19th Feb 2009 19:45
Sorry John, maybe tough under foot but still better than I would do.
90
Reply : Thu 19th Feb 2009 19:57
Struggle maybe but I have seen that you can still hit that ball!
Good luck

I think your eyesight was deceiving you, Dennis.

If your anything like me John after a lay off you will start out like a house on fire, probably doing the front 9 in 42 then as you tire your game will slowly worsen and probably just break 90. I'll go for 88 given the strength of your short game. Never seen you play but heard/read a lot about you on this site. Good luck and don't try to over do it.

Well it does seem that you all have a great faith in my short game, but that has not been tested for some time now. You are probably right though, Chris I am sure to tire very rapidly on the homeward stretch. It is a long course and very few holes are reachable in regulation for me, even when I was playing regularly.

John,
I'll hazard a guess & say 95.
John.

Good luck John, glad to hear you've recovered enough to play again, due to the layoff and conditions not making the course any shorter I'll go for a 91.
Hope the weather's good for you, most of all enjoy it!

I think you guys who are saying in the nineties might be on the button, but I really hope not. If I don't get round under 100 I will pack the game up.
I shall enjoy it Jim, have no fear of that.
So we have an 86,88,90,91,93 and 95 so far.

I'll hazard a guess at 91 but don't overdo it if your body tells you not to complete the round as there is a whole golfing spring and summer ahead and I am looking forward to meeting you at The Belfry and briefly seeing you play as you head down the first.
Reply : Thu 19th Feb 2009 20:45
Come on Jon , that's not fair, putting all that pressure on me on the first. I will probably play safe with an 8 iron off the tee.
Now 2 saying 91, how do I split the prize.

101, sorry John!
I have predicted this score thinking that you may try and protect your knee and therefore won't hit the ball as far.
I hope it doesn't rain for you tomorrow.
I took young Nat for a round on the Priros today and wore a t-shirt and polo shirt all the way around, was it really February?

Thank you all for the support, I just feel I have picked rather a long course to make a come back on.
I might just use a new ball tomorrow to boost my moral.

John, I'm glad you're feeling up to getting back into it and can tell you're looking forward to it but don't overdo the strain on the knee. I hope the weather stays good for the buggies. In a buggy 88, using someone elses gear 95.
Good luck.

I'll take 99, maily due to fatigue on the home stretch and ring rust. Good luck John, and if the knee tells you to stop, listen to it. I need you hale and hearty for the Belfry!

A pretty dismal performance all round, I would say. driving was the usual rubbish, Irons I struck very nicely, but my famous short game is no longer. I just could not get the distances at all. No single putts, but 3 three putts and it is a very long course.
Overall I was not too disappointed as one of my 12 handicap friends who hits the ball miles and has had no lay off, shot the same score as me. 32 points was the best score so that tells you that it was not that easy today, even though the weather was beautiful and sunny.
I am going to have another go there next wednesday.
The only consolation, is that I can only get better as I dropped 7 shots on the last three holes. Incidently we had to start at the 10th as they were doing something to the bunkers on the front nine.
My knee is now pretty sore and the back is totally locked up.

Hope so, Darren, looking for an improvement next wednesday, even though it will be another fiver down the drain.
Thanks for putting up with me today, hope I did not drag you down too much.

Noticed your edit, Mr Marshall, if you are that deperate to win, I will find something suitable for you.

I have PM'd my friend to ask him how many tee times we have and how many are coming, As soon as I know if there is a space I will contact you. A Great course.

John, I wouldn't worry too much about your score.
You've had surgery on your knee and a long lay off so I'd be happy just to be out on the course again.
Give it three months and run this competition again, then we'll see what score you get.

Well done for getting round John - hope you enjoyed it as that is the main thing.
The score will get down and that short game will return once you play some more - Im sure of it!

Well, guys, even though I was pretty disappointed at the score, I know I left a shot a hole out there, so hope for the future.
I have just come back after my first session at the Gym, a very light one to get started, but hopefully things will start to improve once I get the body in a better shape than it is at the moment.
I noticed you had a very nice round at Stapleford Abbots the other day, Russ, keep it up.
