Game at Doncaster Golf Club - Don't miss it!

Posted by: user97421 | Thu 19th Feb 2009 15:58 | Last Reply

Have just got back from playing Doncaster and all i can say, is that if you have your name down to play on Sunday and don't turn up, you are a fool. When i got to the 15th, i was truly sad that the round was nearly over and would have happily gone round again!

Conditions

Greens - 2 temp greens, one having two new bunkers put into the face of the green, the other i'm not sure. The rest are fast, firm and extremly good considering the weather. In fact, they are very good not even counting the recent weather! The temp greens were nearly as good as some proper greens i have played on recently!

Fairways - Apart from the 3rd fairway, which is being attacked by crows, the fairways are in excellent condition. I went round without waterproof trousers on and did not get any mud on me at all.

Tees - Some temp tees, but these are more like astroturf you see on greens, rather than the brush squares you see elsewhere.

The Course - Start off with an easy looking 1st par 4 (which i 4 putted!) before throwing the second at you, which is a blind tee shot down hill to a slightly raised green you cannot see. Be careful of the trees on the right, as there is pond just short of them. After that, no hole is the same, every bunker is placed for a reason, not just to make the course look nice. Another hole to watch out for is the par 5 11th. Long second shot, with a ditch on one side and water on the left and behind. I hit a 4 wood to about 20 feet short of the green after a long drive, but if i had known about the water, i would have laid up short! The course is slighly undulating, but no large hills to speak of.

Should also mention the par 3 10th, downhill long par 3, stunning looking hole. I could go on about nearly every hole on the course, but i will leave the rest for you to see on Sunday

Clubhouse / pro shop - Made to feel VERY welcome. They have 2 buggies for hire at £18 a round, so let me know if you want one (i know someone that would go half on one already). Pro shop well stocked. Clubhouse is very impressive, great changing rooms, great food (that is also cheap). We will be using a conference room which sits 150 for food. This leads out onto a balcony that over looks the 1st tee and the last green.

The halfway house on the 10th tee has male and female toilets (immaculate) plus a hot drinks machine that is 30p a drink.

Other Facilities - 2 putting greens, driving nets, grassed area about 5 minutes walk from the club house is the practice area. Air machines for cleaning your trolley and shoes. Large undercover area outside pro shop behind the first tee to get your stuff sorted out.

If you know anyone who has not got thier name down, get them to contact me, this is a great course.

I've never played at Doncaster GC, but reading Allan's review it might be worth a visit the next time I'm in Doncaster.

Hopefully Allan, I'll be able to give you some notice of when I'm coming up there and we'll arrange a round together.
