The worst shot in golf?

Posted by: user77921 | Fri 6th Feb 2009 12:13 | Last Reply

I clearly have too much spare time on my hands, but I have spent the day thinking what my least favourite shot on the golf course is.

I thought about bunker shots, tricky little putts, hacking out of the rough, but i decided that my worst shot has to be the 1st tee shot in front of a packed clubhouse!!

I always get 1st tee nerves!!

Whats everyone elses least favourite shot during a round?

Oh my god guys,

I played the PGA at the belfry last week, off the first tee in front of the club house and a bus full of people being transported to the Derby i managed to completley fluff the shot resulting in the ball just making it over the road about 5 Yards in front of me!!!

What a cracker

 Can anyone beat that?

(go away weather this is snow good for my handicapp)

Anything with my 5 iron...i think it is broken.  I almost always go for a hard 6 or a down the handle 4......

Conversely my favourite shot is anything with my Driver....love that club (It does not always return the sentiment though!!)

At the moment it has to be the delicate little pitch shot, about 15 yards in length over the semi-rough to a flag that is very close to my side of the green.

Once I've mastered this shot watch out world!!!

I remember the first time I had to tee of with a large audience watching me.....

Crookhill Park GC, between Doncaster and Rotherham, South Yorkshire.

The first hole is a par 4 and you hit your tee shot blind over the crest of a hill about 100 yards in front of you.  There is a very large, old tree on the right hand side of the fairway which is over the crest and at the bottom of the hill.  This tree has a large cowbell on it so you can ring it as you go past.

The first tee was quite long and all the way along the path besides the tee was a bench (I think), or at the least a small stone wall.  Everyone used to sit on the bench/wall waiting for their turn to tee off.

I'd played quite a few times when it was busy, or what I thought was busy!

So my partners and I arrived one day and when we got to the first tee there was about four groups in front of us.  So I popped my golf ball into the tube to take my turn in the queue.

Whilst the groups in front of us teed off the queue behind us was getting bigger and bigger.

When it was our turn to tee off there must have been 30 or 40 people behind us.

I was new to the game but could manage to get my 1 1/2 wood behind the ball on most of my tee shots.

Well I put my golf ball on my tee, did the usual practice swings and then took my place ready to hit my tee shot.  This was when I noticed my right knee shaking!!!

I did manage to make contact with the ball and to my delight watched it go over the crest of the hill and out of sight of the tee.

Never, ever happened again no matter how many people are watching.

Definately dont like the first shot off of the first tee...I'm like Shakin Stevens standing up there when people are watching.  Have yet to have big numbers of people I dont know waiting/watching me.  I know that pleasure is just around the corner though! gulp

Saying that though, I did hit a corker off the 1st tee last weekend with my 18 degree hybrid. Still cant hit with my driver or 3 wood

Watch the clubface onto the ball, Stuart. you are looking to see where it has gone far too early.

Water has become an integral part of modern golf course design because courses can immediately look as though they have been established some time. Without the water there would be hardly any hazards as trees will not have grown.

All golf courses before this crazy surge in the number of new courses, never had the need to provide water as a hazard and some heath courses never even felt the need to provide bunkers, yet all of these courses provided an excellent chanllenge.

Kevin, isn't it funny how you can miss the ball completely then hit a perfect drive when you are 3 off the tee!

I find that if I pull a ball OOB's on my course, the next shot from the tee is superb, always happens, now if only I could get rid of the first shot.......

I've always been a good striker of the ball and it gets in the air no problem so water hazards are not a problem for me.  My only problem is making sure I don't fall into the 'Hit it harder' syndrome!  If I try and hit it harder I hit it fat, resulting in the ball going into the water.

I too suffered with this problem for many years, Chris, and one cannot play golf with this affliction.

After attempting a cure from a couple of different pros I decided that the only way to prevent this happening on these very short shots was to buy a shank proof wedge.

I now have two of these beauty's a 56deg and a 60deg but I only take one out at a time. depending on where I am playing. Putting "f2 wedges" in a search engine will tell you all about them, Chris. Now I never shank a ball.

Any shot where the ball is below my feet or on a down slope.

This means that you are shanking full shots, Chris, and if correct then you have a major swing problem. I only ever used to shank the half shot short pitches up to 40 yds away.

I shanked a few of my lob wedge shots when I first had lessons but I haven't done it for a while now, although my playing partner is going through the same thing at the moment.

A short pitch off a bare lie, over a bunker, to a close flag.

They say a shank is a near perfect shot. If that's the case I'd settle for a 90%er. I occasionally have one but don't rush to the practice pitch anymore to fix it. I know why I've done it.

The shot I dread the most is a left to right downhill putt though I think I holed one once.

I had a problem with my short pitch shots for a while and found that I was not following the club through the ball because I was worried about the distance so I halved the swing and made sure I always follow through.

It has improved my game two fold.
