Competition - How Many?

Here is my collection of golf balls.

These are only the balls I play with, Titleist, Callaway, Srixon, Nike and Bridgestone.

How many golf balls do you think are in this bin?

I can't offer much as a prize, but I will buy the person who gets nearest to the total number a drink.

The bin is about 18 inches long, 12 inches wide and 12 inches deep.

So go on then, how many?

I'll put the answer up here on January 28th (my birthday!)

Are you counting all the balls in the basket or just the makes that you play with?

IMO there was only one golf ball in there but I believe your now using  it Russ.

EXACTLY how big is the container Russ?

I cannot give you an exact measurement as I've put the bin back in it's proper place now, and I can't lift it anymore with all those golf balls in there!

But from my first post is this...... 

The bin is about 18 inches long, 12 inches wide and 12 inches deep.

It's one of those plactic toy box type of bins you find outside pound shops.

 Is this what it has come to? You've all got too much time on your hands, but seeing as I'm here......550. 

Four days to go for the answer and still nobody has got the exact number of golf balls.

Keep trying, and remember there are a some answers that are quite close.

It's gone a bit quiet on the guessing front so I had better remind you all that the drink is waiting to be sent.

I've got the teabag out, all I have to do is write your address on it and put a stamp on, then it's on it's way to you.

554.5 Russell - OK lets go for 555 then, the sides are bending out.

Let’s see.  A golf ball is 1.680” in diameter and the volume of a sphere is 4/3  r3.  Hang on, I don’t know the dimensions of the box.  Bugger.   

Right, there appears to be layers of around 10 balls by 8 balls in the box in around 3¼ layers.  That means approximately 3.25 x 80 = 260 balls.  Add a random engineering factor (it’s never a round number) and I’ll go for 257.

 

Do you want my address to send the tea bag to?

I reckon it must be about 0.027m^3 Chris.

That's mixing the measurements though Tim, a recipe for disaster as you well know.  I'll end up delacring ther's either 7 or 23,956 balls in the box!

deffo more than 500 - i had 200 balls sent to me once and it was in a box less than 1/3rd of that size.

 

I'll stick with 594 +/- 10
