6 GOOD HOLES
Played with my usual 4 ball on Saturday morning and started steadily with bogey on 1, 2 and 3. Then had a run of 6 straight pars all made with single putt greens. This got me to the turn in only 3 over par. I won't go into detail on the back 9 suffice to say that my game fell away a bit. What is the best run against par or below that you can remember?

I was level par after the 1st hole once....
Reply : Tue 9th Dec 2008 09:19
I was 1 under after 4, then took a 9 on the 5th par 5!!!

I played last New Years Eve and I was six over after nine holes.
The worst bit is that I has a par on seven of the nine holes, a bogey on one hole and a nine of the other hole, it was a par four and I hit my tee shot left, OOB's!
It was only after the round that I realised that I had parred seven of the nine holes, and this was on, what I consider to be the hardest nine of the course.
How many times does it happen that we have a good start to a round but the moment we have one bad hole we lose it?

It happens a lot to me!! It all comes down to mental strength I think. If im playing well (particularly with the driver) then I dont really think about my swing too much, i just have a couple of key thoughts. As soon as it goes wrong i then have about 50 swing thoughts and thats when it all goes to pot!

In terms of a run against par, I have once parred all 9 holes of the back 9 at my local course.
My best 9 holes came on the same course and was again, the back 9. I came back -2 to finish +7 for the round!

I once started at my home course , eagle (par 4 chipped in) ,par ,birdie, birdie, par ,par and then this guy who had put his name down to play the comp with us as one of our trio was away , said those really ,really annoying words"you've got a good card going".I don't have to explain the rest of the round needless to say, a really nice chap ,but I was hoping he would get hit by a bus on the way home.
Lowest round on home course Radyr GC 76 +7.
I have played level par twice par 69 Parc GC my 2nd club, a 70 +1 Mountain ash GC 1 bird,2 bogies . 74 +2 Newport GC (won best gross ) 73 +1 Rolls of Monmouth 4 birdies & an eagle started with a DBogie & 5 bogies. Had a run of 4 birdies Langland bay GC should have been 5 dragged a 2ft putt on the previous hole and was -1 gross for a 11 holes at Pyle & Kenfig, sadly didn't finish to my Hcp. (all comps ,no gimmes)
So as for run twice got to 11 holes, par and -1.

I was three over after 8 holes once. As I marked my card I realised how well I was doing and promptly took a 7 on the par 4 9th. Back then we added up at the turn and I had 42 for the front - big mistake. Game went to rats and I carded....well let's just say that I finished high 90's

1 under after 11 holes at Pyle and Kenfig is a great performance, David. I know how difficult that course is.
Reply : Tue 9th Dec 2008 11:42
Definitely a course of two halves in the true sense as you know John, for those that don't, wide open heath land front 9 then true links back 9 pot bunkers, tough rough and a lot of blind shots.I'm playing there on the 27th our club xmas away day. A great course designed by Harry S Colt who also designed my home course Radyr , Royal Portcawl a neighbour to Pyle, also designed the Ganton which you speak highly of, and many other great courses I've heard you talk about John.

earlier in the year I won a major competition at my club with a gross 71 - Birdies at 3 & 5 and bogeys at 1 & 4. All the other holes were at par with most having putts from various ranges for birdies.
One of the "Once in a blue moon" moments. Had a couple of runs like that since but not quite managed to put the whole round together.

You will do it again, Martin, have no fear.
Reply : Tue 9th Dec 2008 13:21
David I thought the last four holes at Pyle were a tough test for anyone. I see your name down for Ganton, David, you will not be disappointed. The kind of course that a good striker will appreciate. I expect you to score well there.

I've been 1 over after 11 holes at pedham before. Then the tough 12th half killed killed me, then the 15th and 16th finished me off.
Reply : Tue 9th Dec 2008 18:33
No such thing as a tough hole with your length, Danny.
Reply : Tue 9th Dec 2008 18:48
I've managed 8 over for 9 holes but never put that sort of form together for a whole round.
My best six holes was last Xmas playing my brother in law when I was only 3 over for the first six with him muttering darkly about not giving me the four shots we had agreed on the back nine. It didn't last and he beat me on the last hole even though I had had my full allocation of 8 shots over the round. Strangely last time we played and he was 4 up after 6 holes he wasn't muttering about giving me extra shots on the back nine.

6 over through 9 my best, and 16 over through 18.
Included 2 birdies, one of which was a missed eagle put

The new irons will do the trick for you Wayne, I am quite sure.
Reply : Thu 11th Dec 2008 13:18
The problem you will have, is that you will not be able to make any excuses anymore.
Reply : Thu 11th Dec 2008 13:39
Wayne,
what new sticks you getting then?? are these ones capable of getting you past the ladies tee??
John.

Once you see them, John F, you will want a set for yourself. They are built by our own clubmaker Dave L and they are awesome.
Reply : Thu 11th Dec 2008 13:49
tell me, tell me I want some.....
Reply : Thu 11th Dec 2008 13:58
can i ask how much they have set you back or does your missus read the forums??
Reply : Thu 11th Dec 2008 14:06
Wayne, as you can see,
your new short irons are very similar to my Marumans that David now owns

Just seen the link to the wishon irons. A mate of mine has them and I hit a few shots down the range with them.
THEY ARE AWESOME !!!!!!! FANTASTIC FEEL AND THE WAY IT SOUNDS WHEN YOU HIT A BALL CENTRE IS UNBELIEVABLE.
If I could afford a set I would definitely buy some.
Reply : Thu 11th Dec 2008 16:25
Just clicked the link. Shhhhhhiiiiiiinnnnnnneeeeeeyyyyyy! I want, I want, I want. I won't be able to hit anything with them but I don't care, they look fabulous!
Reply : Thu 11th Dec 2008 17:07
They are allot more playable than you would think the set Wayne is having is a custom built combo with 7-PW blade & 6-3 cavity with 5.5 FCM rifles. The heads are top quality and made to tighter tolerances than most off the rack gear. Chris they are not shinny either they are a satin finish if you like Bling pm your email and I will send over some pics of Bling gear. They look familiar above..............

I played the Priors course at Stapleford Abbotts GC today.
The front nine was OK but the back nine was great.
The par for the course is 70, two nines of 35 each.
On the front 9 my score was 44 (9 over par.)
For the back 9 I was two over par!
I managed a par on the first four holes, then a double bogey (on a par 3!), then a bogey.
I then got a birdie on the par 3 16th, nearly a hole in one, pitch mark was a foot short of the hole and my ball ended up 8 inches past and right of the hole!
Finally parred the last two holes.
So 1 birdie, 6 pars, 1 bogey and a double bogey.
And to be honest I wasn't really trying, just hitting the ball well.

My course was all on temps this morning so I played at the local muni where I learnt to play golf, It is a par 71.
I shot an 80 (9 over!!) just missed out on carding my first ever sub 80 witrh a lipped putt on the 18th!! Also the course was playing off mats which meant a lot of the holes were a lot longer than normal. Carded 2 pars & 2 birdies on the front 9. The guy I was playing with wouldn't believe me when I told him I played off 15
Everything seemed easy this morning. didn't try too swing too hard or get flustered just nice steady golf (the kind I've dreamed of for ages
John.

Well done. John, nice round of golf.

JF, I suspect you played with a good player today instead of the usual munters dragging you down.
Reply : Fri 12th Dec 2008 19:40
You calling me a munter Ley?!?!?!?!
Bet you're glad that we had no drop outs today now John. Did you play Brandhall?

Talking of munters where's the other one tonight?

Friggin bunkers. How the hell are you supposed to play out of one when the sand is frozen? And there's nothing more annoying than being able to see your ball perched on top of the ice on the lake, mocking you, teasing you, out of reach. I only trickled into the edge, it would've only been in the edge but it skated for ever. @#!#%@~ game!
Reply : Fri 12th Dec 2008 20:09
Hey ,here he is well done Paulie ,wasn't there some sort of bet going on with you two? lets have the gross scores then.
Reply : Fri 12th Dec 2008 21:56
C'mon Paul, get below the ton, it's the third time there! And exactly which lake did Perry end up on?
You doing the Brabazon next week?
Reply : Fri 12th Dec 2008 22:22
I was on the second lake on the fourth with my drive. It just dropped oved the edge and would have been about two inches from the bank but ran and ran. Gutted as it was a cracking drive (a bit too good).
Well, he had to beat me eventually. I suppose he should beat me on gross every week given he is supposed to be two shots better than me. Disappointted with my score but six penalties and 8n bunkers didn't help and I don't think I was really 'there' today either.
Weather looks a bit dicey at the moment for next week. Let's give it a couple of days and have another look at the forecast. The last thing I want to do is pay £35 to play the Brab and have a miserable time in the pissing rain.

Chris,
unless I'm mistaken Paul beat you on Net scores as well??
103 - 19 = 84
106 - 21 = 85
John.

Not upset, I don't mind losing when I deserve to. I didn't play well and despite taking an Adolf due to frozen sand a couple of times the reason I played poorly was me and not the course.
We had a few good hours out there as we always do and I enjoyed it despite the golf.
