Update on my new irons search
Been out this morning trying irons at direct golf & american golf. Walked into direct golf told the assistant what i'm using now, handicap, what i'm looking for from my new set and what irons interested me..... So i tried mizuno mx25, tour burner, tour preferred, r7 draw, ping g10,pingi10, wilson staff d17, d19 and he happened to slip in an adams 6 iron and 4 hybrid???,
I was impressed with the mizuno's the tour burner's, r7 draw and the new Wilson's d19. the Adams a3 was ok, but just didn't want a hybrid set. Direct golf did there "tap test" for the lie and concluded i'm 1' upright??? so i see what Chris Perry & John Flood we're on about with regards to the belfry fitting.
The golf in american golf was really helpful and his explaination of fitting seamed much better!
So i'm now torn between mizuno mx25, taylormade tour burners, and possibly the r7 draw (well they we're great to hit and the price is definatley right!) Any thoughts guys?

Paul,
I think you should go to the belfry with an open mind & don't disregard any of the irons you tried & thought 'nah, not for me' as you might find that these might be best suited for you.
I think Wayne was getting annoyed with another new thread on this topic where you could have added to the original one??
John.

Don't go for draw irons IMHO as they will encourage a swing flaw. From the ones you have listed, my preference was the MX25 but didn't try the Wilsons. Make sure you try the Cally X20 if you like the MX25.

Paul,
It all depends on if you need them altering for loft/lie etc. Mine did so it took about 2 weeks but if they don't need adjusting & they have them in store then you can have them straight away.
For I play with the R7's (not the draw) & they are a fantastic club.

Wayne, click on admin on the top bar, then data lists on the bottom of the right hand side column. This will show the list of numbers.

"YOUR PECKING ME HEAD NOW"
Surely that should be "YOU'RE pecking MY head now" Wayne. The levels of grammar are definitely declining in this country. I blame these youngsters with their text speak.......

Make sure you kick the dealer in the nuts and get the best deal you can.

Paul, I have it on good authority that you will know when the irons you finally get are the ones for you, beacuse you will suffer with a h*rd on.

I hope you've got them by Friday so you've got a good excuse when I whip your ass.
Oh, and having experienced a 7 month pregnant partner twice I better be careful what I say on Friday; I don't want you developing a six wood........

Paul, I wouldn't just go all out for the new latest bling, it's amazing what you can find stashed away in an old cupboard.

Not so much of the old cupboard, Leyo.

As there's a lot of new stuff being released just before Christmas, have all your fittings etc but wait a couple of weeks before buying and you should see the clubs you eventually pick go down in price. It may even bring a couple of options into your price range.

Don't rush for the sake of getting some and getting it over with. Like I said to you a few weeks ago, you should've started looking about six weeks before you had the money as it stops you being tempted to impulse buy. I spent three months trying different types before deciding. Better to wait and be sure.
Must admit the MX25's were in my top three with the Srixons that I got and the Callaway X20's. If you're going to the Belfry, listen to what they tell you because they are independent and they just want to help you get the best club for your game. Tell them your budget, be honest on your strengths and weaknesses and tell them what you do and don't want from your set (wide soles, hybrid irons, etc). If they recommend Dunlop 65i's from Sports World, listen to them.

Just be aware that if you do need a lie adjustment (I'm 1* flat) or need anything ither than regular shafts then you won't be able to take the clubs with you. That's when the frustration really kicks in. Or in my case, you've bought them in the US and you have to wait four days until you get home before you can use them.

Paul,
How much better was the Belfry than the 'tape' test. At least now you know you've got the clubs that best suit you.

A few small ones? I'd ask for my money back cos they've obviously missed all the big ones!
Out of interest, why did they/you feel there was a need to reduce your backspin? Do you want a more penetrating ball flight and longer roll?
Reply : Thu 13th Nov 2008 14:07
Chris,
They probably said he needed to reduce his backspin as he probably doesn't have a problem getting the ball airborne so the new shafts will help him achieve more distance.

Oli,
It can cover what you want within the 2 hour time slot you have. If you want to try putters I would mention that at the start so he can arrange it.
