Ball Position
Out today for our none scoring round I tried something new.
Set up with legs closed and then just move the back foot back. This left the ball position always in the same place ie off the front foot. The distance I moved the back foot back depended on which club I was useing.
Anybody else have the ball off the front foot for all clubs (apart from wedges)....

Just inside the left foot about about 2-3".The reason being is thats where the bottom of my ark is at impact position. So its only a good position if you are getting into your left side.

More or less the same as David unless its windy and I'm trying to keep the ball lower into the green and then I will hit my short irons off a more central position.

Being left handed I was getting into my left side more and also found I could hit the ball through the bottom right hand quarter (if that makes sense)..

With my woods, I try a different ball position on every tee shot, searching for that magical position that will send the ball down the fairway. I have not found it yet as when I do hit one that is passable as a drive I forget how I did it.
My irons also have varying ball positions depending on how I see the shot, playing the ball forward if I want height and towards the back when I wish a lower ball flight, which is most of the time as I learned from a great Spnaish golf Pro, with whom I played with for three years when I lived in Spain, that it is much easier to judge the distance of a shot that is aimed at the top of the flag than it is to launch one so high that the forward distance becomes a lottery.

i hit everything off the front foot. Basically i open my left foot slightly, and line up the ball with my left hell. Seems to work alot better for me then any other ball position.

I hit my Driver 1 inch back from my left heel then the ball goes progressively backwards for each club until the ball with my sand wedge is in the middle of my stance.

Thats good robbie...you should be building a solid post on your right coming into the ball by moving your right hip towards target, and turning your left into your right side.

John you've hit on one of the great mysteries of golf for me. If I hit a bad drive I can remember exactly what I did and how it felt. On the rare occasion I hit a really good one I haven't the foggiest idea what I did and can rarely replicate it.

I go for the ball in the middle of my stance for the wedges, etc.
For the mid irons I move the ball slightly forward, only about half a ball.
For my long irons I move the ball forward about a ball and a half from the middle of my stance.
All my woods are off the inside of my left heel, even the 3 wood off the floor.
Now all these are for normal shots.
If I'm trying to keep the ball low and into the wind I'd hit a punch shot, and I'd alter my ball position if I needed to hit it high over a tree. But these are special shots so require a different setup.
I remember reading/seeing somewhere that high handicappers would be better off moving the ball further back in their stance, and low handicappers would benefit from moving the ball forward in their stance. Now how true this is I don't know, but try it out and see if it works for you.
I've also seen a few videos that totally go against each other. One said keep the ball in the middle of your stance for all your irons, and then the other one said move the ball around for each club!
