irons or woods ?
I am having serious trouble at the minute with my irons, basically I can't hit them and thats from wedge to 3 iron, I have started using my woods and am playing reasonably well with them, I have 3,5,7 woods and a driver though I have decided to stop using the driver as i am straighter with my 3 wood. I can play most shots with my woods including hitting in from 60-100 yrds with my 7 wood, which gets up into the air nicely for a soft landing.I would like to add to my collection of woods as the woods I have at the minute replce my longer Irons, now the question are there woods that are equivilant to the shorther irons for instance an 8 or 9 iron, i have seen hybrids with loft of 17,20, and 23 would any of these be suitable ? I intend going for lessons with my Irons I was hitting them quite well a few weeks back but in the meantime I would like to go out and enjoy my golf.

I realise we always end up arguing, Pat, but irons, when struck correctly are very inspiring and will give much greater reward than attempting to use these new fangled hybrids of varying degrees of loft.
No such thing as can't you just need to be shown the correct way.

17 = 2 Iron, 20 = 3 Iron, 23 = 4 Iron or thereabouts.
I have seen a 5 Iron replacement at 26 degrees but nothing higher lofted than that unless you start looking at ladies rescue clubs.
Cobra, Nike, Callaway do sets that start as rescue/hybrids and become more iron like as the lofts increase.

I'm trying something new with my irons that seems to be working (so far). Basically, I am ignoring the fact that I have hold of a club and just swinging my hands. The aim is to get my hands into the right position at the takeaway, through the swing and to the finish. I find it easier to focus on as I am putting my own body into the right position instead of trying to put the club there. If my hands are right, the club must be. I'm finding I'm striking the ball much cleaner and the flight is much straighter. However, you need to ensure your address is correct........

Don't Wilson have the Fybrids? I believe they are like hybrids all the way down.

A friend of mine has a set of woods up to 13 wood, however he got the 13 wood from america. but the others from uk.
I have some hybrid irons which I don't use anymore. they are 6 to pw. with steel shafts. and a 4 hybrid with graphite shaft. you are wlcome to try them if you are anywhere near leeds.

In days gone by hitting against a firm left side was how it was done, Henry Cotton was a classic example and he was a pretty good player.
If that is what your Pro has come up with for your money, I would seriously think of finding someone else. The length of the shaft has no bearing on whether or not you clear the left side.

This is the problem, these days, J P, too many so called experts calling themselves Pros when they have never achieved anything in the game, but jump straight into a teaching position with no concern at all for their pupils other than to extract money.
Telling someone that the length of the shaft is what determines whether one clears their hips or not has got to be a classic.

I have mostly woods in my bag for the same reason. I have a Callaway Big Bertha 13 wood, yes a real 13 woodand it's my favorite club in my bag. I can hit that club dead from 140-150 yards every time and straighter than any of my irons. When needed I can choke down 2 inches on this club and hit a 100 yard shot better than any iron as well. The only irons I carry are my Vokey wedges and PW/9 iron.
My set of woods is 3, 5, 7, 9 and 13, all Calaway (graphite shafts). A hybrid Callaway 3+ for replacing my 3 wood out of semi or short rough.

Posted by Pat bFitzsimons and I quote:
I agree John there are too many know it alls in golf.
I gather from that one line that you are attempting to have a go at me. Well. Pa you may well be right, but at least I have achieved a level that gives me the right and credentilas to offer m,y thoughts on this game. Just because I was correct in pointing out that the length of the shaft has nothing to do with clearing your hips, you immediately went into your atomic mode.
Reading your posts tells me that you know nothing about this game at all, and nothing seems to sink into you. J P offered sound advice and you immediately jumped on him.
Another one of your one line digs:
Oh by the way the lessons was free, not everyones in it for the money .
Is this a new Irish language? in England we would have said, either 'the lessons were free' or 'the lesson was free' - a subtle difference I know, but I am sure you will eventually get your head round it.

Once again you are wriggling, been found out again with a load of bulls**t and cannot handle it. Poulter proved you wrong again and you went into hiding.
So it was a simple spelling error, was it, I would have thought you would have known the difference between 'was' and 'were', obviously not.
The reason I picked you up on the ridiculous statement that you made by inferring that the length of the shaft determines how you clear your hips was because it is a load of old guff and no profesional who know anything about the mechanics of a golf swing would tell you that, unless of course he is one of these so called professionals because they work in a golf shop, having never won anything either as an amateur or a professional.
Your initial response to J P was that you had no wish to get into an argument with him even though you knew he was correct in what he said. You just don't like being told that you are wrong.
When you make posts with content I know to be ridiculous, then I am bound to comment, not to show off or anything like that, but to prevent those new players just starting the game from taking on board the rubbish you seem to have a penchant for posting.

Good post, Pat, see, you can do it if you concentrate.
