divots and pitch marks

Posted by: user104363 | Sun 7th Sep 2008 21:43 | Last Reply

i was just wondering. is there now more and more divot patches and pitch marks not being repaired by people. there just seems to be a lot more players out there who just cant be bothered or are just to lazy. dont they realize that a couple of seconds it takes to replace divots makes it a better game for everone including themself

Thats right it is ignorance, it's amazing how many people walk past their pitch mark to their ball and never even think of the pitch mark.

Personally i am still quite proud of my pitch mark so I make a piont of repairing them, as I don't get too many.

As for divot's, Kevin, you'r right there does seem to be more lazy people on golf courses lately, not sure it is all to do with society players though.....

Same for me Tony, sort of badge of honour for hitting the green.  I usually repair two (sort of an unwritten rule at the first course I ever played) and quite often repair them even if I'm not using the green.

I was going to have a little rant earlier in the year about people who do repair divots but don't tread them in properly.  If you don't tread them in sufficiently trollies flip them out or birds pull them out when they are looking for worms.  It is frustrating to walk up a fairway and see numerous divots laying just by their holes.

Ok, this may spark a debate, but...

....I was talking to a friend yesterday about properly run old members clubs and saying how (on the rare occassions) when you get to play them, they are in absolutely fantastic condition, simply because their members respect the course and the traditions of the game. Dont get me wrong, I have no time for the stuck up members who think that golf should only be enjoyed by them. Golf is for all and its the only way that the sport will carry on. However I think that everyone new to the game should go round with an established player just to learn about the ettiquette of the game.

I agree, I think I suggested this a while back but like new drivers (in cars) & bike riders where they have to pass a written test etc I think that new golfers should be taught the basics off golf which can include etiquette, repairing pitch marks & divots & also who should buy the beer afterwards!!!!

Wayne, do I detect a hankering for the return of the good old days?

Oh how I wish I could make a pitchmark again.
