What is the best round ever?
I wonder what the lowest net score is ever? Can it be a lot better than a net 52? Having played golf on a friendly basis I finally joined a golf club, back in January and have thrashed my way around with a handicap of 26 – because of the rogue 8s and 9s that creep in. I’m sure you know what I mean. However, with Sunday’s glorious weather, running fairways, fast greens and an enormous amount of luck I had the round of golf we all pray for when everything goes right and went round in a 5 over par 78 – i.e. a net 52. JOY JOY JOY. Never to be repeated but it will always be remembered by me. Later in the 19th it raised the subject of lowest ever scores net and gross. Does anyone know what these are?

Great round, well done. My handicap is high for the same reason - rogue bad holes wrecking the card. However, I'm glad you weren't playing with us yesterday as you'd be swimming with the 23 balls lost on the 18th if you'd come in with a score like that!

Using my UK handicap, my best round is a 57 net one year ago this week, a 57 at Mitchum. Next best was this past week at 60. If I was using my USGA handicap, both those rounds would have been 51 and 55 net.

I have never seen the back tee on the 11th ever used, as it makes it an easier hole by being a par five. Very good fours at nine and ten though as well as an exceptional three at number four, not forgetting a par at the famous 16th. The guy can obviously play and is not the handicap he says he is.

You are attempting to stir it Dave, what a surprise.
I have played The Downshire many times and it is not an easy course at all, yet he seems to have made all the difficult holes look rather easy. The par five tenth is about 513 yards with a river in front of the green of probably about 20 feet wide and the carry over this from the tee is about 479 yards. I doubt he reached the green in two so he obviously made a good third shot and holed the putt. I have never seen a high handicap player even look like making a par let alone a birdie. He also birdied the ninth, but this I can accept assuming he hits long straight shots.
One could sit beside the sixteenth green all day and probably count on one hand the number of players who hit that green in two. It is a very difficult hole.
The third is another hole where not many get on that green in two so to make three there is rather exceptional.
I would like a game with him there to witness this great skill, I wonder if he would be up for it.

I congratulate you John in your skillful avoidance of using the 'B' word.
I'm sure sure Dave wasn't trying to stir it at all. He was probably dong the same as me and imagining you sitting at your PC bursting to rant and trying to resist the urge. I know that 'spurious' results such as this are a pet hate of yours.

What is this 'B' word you speak of, Chris. Even David Ley, with whom I played with last week attempted to get me to respond to something on the forum, but I decided to let it ride, but on the other hand, if you really want me to stir up a few members then I possibly could be persuaded.
'Spurious' now what a lovely word that is. I am all for seeing people shoot good scores, but anyone who does, cannot possibly be masquerading on some of the handicaps they are claiming.

lol John, I also get accused of sandbagging with my handicap which was over 20 until one round last week. But an average score of 95 + over 30 rounds is my proof that those 41's on the front nine are only a temporary aberation. But I do make a great scramble partner with my handicap because every now and then, usually on holes where I got two strokes were the ones that helped my teams win two tournaments in the past few months.

Shot 84 today in the monthly medal at Frome GC to finish NET 7 under 62 off my official 22 handicap. Despite a Triple bogey at the 15th par 3 water hole and a double at the 16th par 5 ( I was getting the jitters bad by this point) my best and most steady round ever.

I did shoot 80 around Frome at the start of the year when I was still off 26, so that was NET 15 under 57. Off winter mats and a couple of temp greens then though so not the full course.

As you can imagine the B word was mentioned on the odd occasion in the clubhouse after!

It is going to be mentioned now as well, John. Pleased to see the game coming together, you crook.

Unfortunately not a lot of people out yesterday so only took home £20.00 on the friendly roll up. It was a low scoring day (very little wind for a change) as 6 and 5 under came second and third.
I've found a good vein of form at the moment. Just hope it lasts until August 16th when our 36 hole club championship is on. At least I cannot be accused of protecting my handicap after shooting yesterday's score. I'm expecting at least two, possibly three shots cut. So i will need to be playing well to have any chance!
