In the long stuff
Played a game the other day, and one of the players dropped out of long grass. He said it was unplayable. It was more than 2 club lengths to a playable lie, so he dropped it in the semi going sideways from his unplayable lie. I pulled him up, saying he could go back has far has he wanted to has long has he kept the original ball in the unplayable lie and the flag in line. Or he could go back and drop from where he hit his last shot. He ignored both and played the hole out insisting he was playing with in the rules. Thankfully he didn't score, but how many do this. Bi the way I think I’m right in this ruling, come in J.P.

You are corect, Graham, you gave him his options but he still dropped incorrectly by dropping outside of the two clublength rule.
I am afraid that this is a common occurrence these days and I have given up even mentioning the rules to them, I let them get on with it, I just ask how many they scored after each hole, as in the end they are only cheating themselves.

By not penalising him, Jon T, you broke a rule yourself. One that says you cannot agree to waive a rule in golf.
Once rules become bendable then the spirit of the game is lost. It is a tough old game and has tough rules, which are all there for a purpose.

Is there anything in the rules about which club you use to measure the two club lengths ie can you choose any club in your bag including, if you have one, a broomstick putter or must it be the club you are about to use for the next shot.

The Pro's all seem to use the driver, being the longest club, but I don't know whether or not a broomhandle putter would be allowed.

If that was the case, David then obviously it is correct, as you say it is a legal club, but are they any longer than a driver.

So you use drivers out of the rough then, Steven, you must be an excellent striker of the ball. I used to be able to play a driver from the fairway, but not any longer.

Is that right, ''rules state you should measure the relief with a club you intend to play the shot with'', I'm sure I see pro's inclucing tiger using is driver, and then playing an iron out of the rough.

Maybe they intend to play with the driver till just after they drop it and then change their minds.
