Richard ,i would suggest a set of callaway big bertha irons ,they come 4 to sw iron with a reg shaft known as uniflex on callaways These should cost between £130 -£180 second hand (try ebay be wary of fakes though). A 3 wood 15* and a utility/rescue wood around 23* and a two ball putter . I wouldn't bother with a driver until you start to get a decent swing going.
Most importantly book a course of lessons with PGA pro this will be money well spent good luck.

Im saving for those very clubs, tried a friends a few weeks back and ive only been playing since last month, loved them. I am generally dreadful with a driver, but the bertha driver is rather good too. If you want them brand new there are a few websites that are doing 4-LW for £320ish.

Hi Richard,
Another option would be to go the secondhand route, As the golfing marketing machine is very powerfull some players seem to think that they need to change clubs alot, and there for you can get some real bargains on say 2year old clubs which are in very good nick. Have a look in the second hand section of american golf or nevada bobs, or ofcourse check out Ebay.
With regard to new clubs, dont be persauded by big names as some of the less popular manufacturer produce some outstanding sets MD and RAM spring to mind. You can get very good sets for approx £150.
What i would advise to avoid would be the Dunlop sets that are being punted from sports scoccer or scoccer world as a friend of mine bought a set and apart from being very "cheap" feeling one of the irons fell apart after the second round.
Hope this helps.

I started with a Ram set (the graphite concept II's) and they were brilliant. Eventually grew out of the woods but they kept me going for a few years, still use the putter and the stand bag. Shame you're up North Richard, you could have had my old set (nobody wants to buy them!).

Interesting selection there Richard. Personally, I'd stick in a paltry bid for the Ping G2's, the Ping Eye 2's are a bit old. As for the TM's, I wouldn't be seen dead on a course with them unless I was very, very good. Talk about bling....

richard,
Thats an intresting selection that you have posted there, The Ping's were and still are good clubs, not sure if they would suit a beginner tho. The R7's again are very nice clubs (ive tried them at the range) and if you can live with the "bling" factor then i would give them some thought.
Also worth looking at the TM OS2 clubs, again a very nice club and now you can get them for a very reasonablle amount. Have a look at this for an idea

Again as adam said its always worth trying a few sets before you part with your hard earned. Also i cannot stress how important lessons are. It will save you some serious greif in the long rin.
Cheers
