Course Closure

Posted by: user79538 | Wed 30th Apr 2008 16:11 | Last Reply

Turned up at the Golf Club today a bit earlier than my usual 10.00am, and, as I was driving up towards the entrance road, I noticed that there were less cars in the car park than usual.  As I drove in I could see the "Course Closed" sign and wondered just how much rain we could have had overnight!

WhenI got in the Pro-shop, I noticed the booking sheet had something written across it:-

Course Closed - overhead power cables down!!

We have a power line that goes across the 1st, 18th, 15th 14th and 13th, but they rarely come into play, except for the very best drives off the 14th, long 2nd shots into the 13th (i.e. following crap tee shots), and skyed tee shots at 18.  We also have one Category 1 player who managed to hit the ones over the 15th fairway off the 15th tee, but he is probably the longest hitter in the Club!

This excuse for course closure is the strangest I've ever come across, but maybe some of you guys have seen stranger.

I've never had a course closed other than for weather reasons.

Probably the club had to shut the course if the cables were still live as they would be paying out loads of money in compensation if they let people play and one of them got killed!

Terry,

You are asking where a whole Course is closed for an incident? Many seem to have had Holes taken out of play for an incident (last few replies) so if you had asked about "Part Closures" you may have got more replies.

I've only had a course closed due to snow.. I was gutted! After playing in rain, storms and everything but snow, I was looking forward to ticking 'snow' off my list!

When I look back now, I had absolutely no chance of getting on did I??

The Labour party once closed our local course because there was too much Conservative golf being played!

Thanks guys - some strange and interesting reasons out there for closing (parts of) courses.

We're closed at the moment due to snow.  I played on 1st, 2nd and 3rd January and now wondering when I'll next be able to get out there.

Here's hoping for a thaw for the weekend!

Wayne,

Don't be too sure, was out for new year and Salgados was closed on the 30th December.  It had about five puddles on the fairway when we tipped up.  The Algarve has experienced an amazing amount of rain this winter, and its now quite let up as of yet...!!
