i have been playing alot recently and shooting quite well low 70's but i keep finding my self with great distance on my irons landgin with in 2-5foot of the pin but rolling part to around 15-20ft which is making those burdie putts alot harder

does any one have any tips on how to get more check on spin off the ball

i realize i could just aim shorter and let it run up but i like to attack the pins

Greg, I think you need to get two more rounds added or manually adjust your handicap so people can see how good you are from your handicap figure on the site.

Can't really help as completely out of my league.

David, read the post. He knows how to get check and spin on the ball he just wants to know how to get more of it.  Point taken though.

Jon, I think you will find that he has worded the post very poorly and by using the word 'more' he is actually meaning more than the nothing he is currently getting.

One does not get a 70 by being lucky, the ball must be struck solidly all the way round, my guess is that he flights the ball fairly low as he will not be strong enough yet at his age to generate the power needed for very high ball flight and because of this, getting any kind of stop is really a lottery. Possibly also the course he is playing could have very hard fast surfaces where nothing will stop.

John, was only trying to get a rise.  As well as being a poor golfer I haven't worked out yet how to do the smiley faces to let people know I'm joking.  Glad to see you've put your sinicism aside and started to impart some of your considerable knowledge to Greg.

Greg although I often disagree with many of John's opinions he is certainly worth listening to on all matters technical.  You could also do with a spell check to make your posts a little more readable.  May be you spent a little too long on the sports field and not enough concentration in literacy and computing.  I would do a smiley face here if I could.

Jon, I was not attempting to get a rise, as you inferred, as I addressed the post to you and not Greg. I was only offering a reason as to why he cannot stop the ball on the green, he has since confirmed what I said, that he does have a low ball flight and with the draw that he is favouring, the ball will run when it lands.

He is obviously a great striker of the ball and is hitting a lot of greens in regulation, and it is not easy to get long irons to stop unless you can carry them in high.

Greg, the fact that you play with a draw tells me that your plane is correct as it is impossible to draw the ball unless it is.

I, myself have always favoured a draw shot, as it takes away all the trouble on the right and is handy when playing to tight flags on the right side of the green as the ball will be moving away from it to safety.

I would suggest that providing there is room for a run up then with the longer irons one would have to take this into consideration, especially to a front pin, after all these things are all part of the game.

Modern courses all seem to have lakes or massive bunkers in front of all the greens and for the majority of us all we are being forced to lay up and then having to rely on a good pitch and one putt. This is bad course design as it does not give the option of running a ball in. After all is said and done the courses are mostly played by amateurs, not pros and apart from those 28 handicap members on this site who can hit it three hundred yards, most of us don't.

Keep up the good work, Greg, seems to me that you are working in the right direction and that soon you will really get to grips with this game. Just being able to draw the ball, tells me you swing is sound. The ball has to be struck correctly on plane to achieve this kind of flight and very few are capable of it.

I tried drawing the ball once but it looked more like an egg...

I try to pitch to the front of the green and let the ball roll to the pin - same with a chip. I would not chip to pin - my chip would be to somewhere in front off the pin and let the ball roll on up.

In theory guys/girls - in theory...........
