Waynetta was a stirling captain and a partner full of moral support. Of course, a bit of golfing support would have been nice....

This event was one of the most enjoyable I have ever attended and thanks must go to both Darren and Luke for their sterling work in ensuring everything went smoothly. They even managed to give us the four seasons of weather all on one hole, but even this did not detract from the serious business of the South attempting to wrest the trophy from the North. Unfortunately we failed, but I believe that we put up sterner resistance this year than last, so perhaps we can finally get across the line first, next year.
I count myself fortunate that I had wonderful company for both of the days competitions. Simon, Colin and Tony on the Sunday where I witness some very long hitting by Simon and some fine play by Tony, both Colin and myself had a trying time, but enjoyable nevertheless.
Mondays match was really exciting as the South managed to keep in the lead for most of the day, only losing out in the later stages. My partner Alps, played extremely well and I only needed to support him on a few occasions. Our opponents Steve and Tim started off like a train with a five nett four on the first and I had a distinct feeling that we were going to be up against it, but Steves early promise thankfully subsided and we managed to take control and sneak the win. I was very impressed with Tims play and but for his putting he could have been the one to have made the match tight.
The longest drive down the last, as you all know by now was won by Phil with a distance of 258 yds and when one sees where the ball finished in relation to the hole itself I just cannot imagine someone hitting it three hundred yds. A great finishing hole being a par five with a huge lake in front of the green with a balcony full of p**s takers hooting and hollering was enough to put anyone off their stroke, but both myself and Alps managed birdies, so that was a nice high note to finish on.
Both the captains played their parts very well with Simon winning the best dressed award, deservedly so, as it must have cost a fortune and Wayne was exactly how I have always perceived Northerners to be, friendly and jovial. Thank you for the putter Wayne, much appreciated.
Special mention to Martin on a fine round of golf to win the individual but I must also say that he was trying like hell to hold his stomach in when the photographs were taken, as was I.
It was nice to meet up with the guys from Donnington Grove and also a pleasure to meet new faces at this event. Till next time.

Sorry to hear that, Paul, but I don't think you were the only one, not by a long way.
Reply : Tue 15th Apr 2008 20:32
Yep don't worry Paul, I've just watched the videos and there were a few
Hope to have some photos, videos, results and review up very soon.
Thanks all for a very enjoyable day.

Paul,
If it makes you feel any better I know someone who shall remain nameless put 5 into the water at the last .
Superb day.
I found a bunker on 8 holes on the front 9 so had to rely heavily on my playing partner. Thankfully I found some form on the back 9 to reprieve myself which helped us take the victory.
Can't wait for the piccys & videos.
John.

In a way I think we were lucky with the balcony, there were only a few people there when we came in. Very tough and nerve racking finishing hole, it was amazing to see just how many balls went in there - and nobody was laughing up on the balcony, we all felt for everyone of you. Unfortunately, I think that most of them are on video.....
I didn't realise that you birdied it John, just proves that you don't need to be long to score well. Fantastic effort from you and Alps, of course.
Reply : Tue 15th Apr 2008 20:47
John, think I have those on video also
Reply : Tue 15th Apr 2008 21:02
You weren't the only one Chris, there were quite a few coming in via alternative routes.
Reply : Tue 15th Apr 2008 21:50
Chris,
I wish there were cameras on the 10th as I put my 2nd shot to within inches of the cup, still managed to miss the birdy putt. I blame all that fertiliser on the greens!!!
Reply : Tue 15th Apr 2008 22:45
special thanks to darren and luke + both captains and my playing partners John, Tim and Steve - and everyone else, had a fantastic day and getting that long putt in on the 18th for a birdie made it all the better. mwhahahahah
Just wanna ask though - did anyone actually land on the green on the par 3 17th ??? talk about miles away.......
Phil - that was an amazing drive on the 18th !! we want you drug tested at the next event though!! LOL

Tim, when we looked down the eighteenth and saw where the longest drive marker was, it seemed a hell of a long way away. My drive, although on the fairway for a change, was nowhere near it, but Alps managed to get about ten yds past it. When we got to the marker we saw that it was you who had made the drive. I thought Alps would win it, but apparently Phil was 45 yds past Alps' ball. What a drive.
The difference was I then needed a three iron and an eight iron to get on the green whereas Alps took two nine irons.
Shot of the day on that hole must have been by Tim in our group, who thinned a wedge over the green and hit the clubhouse at least 12' high and almost bounced back in bounds, only being short by about two inches. We could not stop laughing.

I knew it wouldn't last as a longest drive with Alps behind us, but at least I had my 10 minutes of fame (along with the nearest the pin - advantage of going first), still really pleased with it at about 228 according to the buggy sat-nav.
Shot of the day in our group definately goes to Simon, one of the ugliest thinned attempted chip shots I've ever seen from just off the green on the 17th, and as it raced across the green it was bound for the 18th tee but hit the flag, jumped up higher then the black line on the flag and promptly dropped for a birdie to make it all square. At least he had the good grace to not claim he did it on purpose!

i feel so ashamed to have done that, i'm truly sorry. Great shot though!
First and foremost i would like to say thank you to my playing partners over the weekend. Wayne, Tim, John, Tony and Colin. Its not very often you meet people for the first time, rip the p**s out of eachother for 5 hours and be able to call yourselves friends at the end of it. Gentlemen i thank you, from the bottom of my bunker.
Thank you also to Darren and Luke for getting the day sorted. well done and i lookforward to the next.
Tim, you played like a demon on Monday mate. (apart from the drive that went into orbit on the 14th) may want to tee it up a little lower next time. great play.
Colin, i play with you week after week and have never seen you hit bunker shots like that before. an insparation to us all. thanks for carrying me on Monday. #
Wayne. a truly deserving Captain. We both played like Tw*ts and i tip my hat to you Sir. well done and a top friend.
and Me... Played like Tiger for 3 holes. managed to card a srixion (333) on the score card for the 4th, 5th, and 6th (with a 40ft birdie) then Tiger buggered off and was replaced with a 50 handicapper with 14 baseball bats instead of clubs. (after scoring a whopping 13 on the 10th. and i was 6ft off the green for 3!!!!!)
best dressed golfer now for 2 years running... The next outfit is planned and calls are bing made to get is sorted ASAP. you will all have to go some to beat what i have planned. You have been warned!
thank you all once again. it was good to put faces to names and i look forward to the next NvS
DAN SARF!!!

Thanks to all the people who put the effort into organising the day - Darren, Luke, Wayne and Simon in particular. Thanks to the opposition, Paul and Terry, for a much closer match than the score would suggest. Special thanks to my playing partner, John. We made a formidable team, taking it in turns to have good and bad holes to take the pressure off each other and ensuring neither had to carry the other. One final thanks to all, especially Wayne, Kev and Rosa, from my better half, Jo, who had a really enjoyable weekend after being made to feel so welcome.
Whilst I managed to avoid the ignomy of coming last this time (unlike the end of season cup last year), I will raise my hand and admit that I am the orange wearing, club tossing, tantrum throwing buffoon who put four (not five as John suggested) balls into the lake at the 18th. I actually made the green with the second one after doing a great dambusters impression before falling victim to the slope of the green. Two things made it worse; 1 - The full balcony (and missus on the patio!) 2 - I cleared it first time on Sunday.
Looking forward to the pics, not so much the video. See you all again at the Northern Cup.
Reply : Wed 16th Apr 2008 13:05
Nice one, Chris, pleased you and the missus enjoyed yourself, mine certainly did.
Reply : Wed 16th Apr 2008 13:11
Chris - I remember those in the lake - the video evidence will see who's right about the number of balls in the drink! What I thought was good was that you managed to get three of them in exactly the same place!
Reply : Wed 16th Apr 2008 13:17
Timothy, I have a response to that but this is too nice a place to post it. Suffice to say, I have two and they're hairy!!!
