Never played although always wanted to give this a go. Problem i find is i dont play enough now and when i do turn up at the course i want to hit all my shots myself, i have the same issue with matchplay, never pick up even if ive lost the hole and really goes agaisnt the grain sticking it way past the hole just on the off chance it will go in to half the hole.

There are many versions of a Scramble, but the three that I know are the Basic Scramble, the Texas Scramble and the Ambrose. All have differing variations of the same theme. None, incidently play off scratch as it would make the competition unfair. In a fourball it is usual to add all the handicaps up and divide by 8, this is then the handicap for the competition. A three ball scramble would divide by six and a 2 ball scramble divide by 4. Hope that helps.
The main difference between a basic scramble and a Texas scramble is that in the Texas scramble it is normal to stupulate how many drives must be made per player.

Would you not say, David, that if one team comprised single figure handicap players and the other teams were made up of 28 handicappers that it would not be a fair contest if some form of handicap was not taken into account.
Texas scrambles rules say that a certain number of drives must be used from each player, usually at least two, this is decided amongst the tournament makers, whereas in an ordinary scramble the best drive is always taken even if it is from the same person in the team.

A high handicap team of say 18,22,24 and 28 would, under the Ambrose system receive only 11.5 (12) shots and for that standard of golfers, is not a lot.

Sounds like a team to take on anyone. I wonder if we can get any takers?
I personally believe that the scramble favours the lower combinations.

I only ever used to play in one handicap competition and that was "The Grand Atlantic Trophy" held at Weston-Super-Mare Golf club each year usually in June/July. It also has a Scratch prize which I have won on three occasions but I did actually win the handicap as well in 1979 with 137(I think I was off 2 at the time). Normally there are no players higher than 12 handicap because they ballot and over 36 holes then the better players have more of a chance.

This is a coincidence - Im playing in a Texas Scramble at my club today. We play in a team of 4 with a combined handicap of 1/8. As it
s the Texas version of the Scramble we have to use at least 4 of each persons drives. In last years Texas Scramble we finished fourth with 48 points. I
ll let you know how we got on later. Ian

Ah!, Danny, isn't that the one where the person whose shot is selected as the best has to sit out playing the next shot and so on until the ball is holed.

Hello Ian, good luck today in the scramble and you are correct in the 1/8th rule of the combined.

Played in a Texas Scramble yesterday scoring 44 points off of a combined handicap of 7 shooting a gross 71 (par 72 course). Although we played really well as a team we didn`t have a demon putter and as a result ended up taking 34 putts, which was quite frustrating as we hit 14 greens in regulation. Overall though we had a really good enjoyable day, even though we were nowhere near winning the competition - Ian

From what I hear they were still on reel to reel when you were buying.
