What the club says: Set under the back drop of the North Chalk Downs on the edge of Swindon this family-run 9 hole course covers 100 acres of mature parkland. The natural contours of the land, mature trees and hedgerows make this an interesting course with many natural obstacles including water features, also bunkers and hazards. The complex also has a 20-bay floodlight driving range, licensed cafe and two footgolf courses.

New holes open
Basset Down is quite a "new kid on the block" having opened in 2005 but is not sitting back on its laurels, for four new holes have come into play, and in fact are now the highlight of the course. Since opening, the site has attracted many golfers both to the fine chalkland based course, but also the fine driving range, and this combined with a very friendly reception, a basic but adequate bar and eating area has made it a welcome addition to the Wiltshire countryside. As mentioned earlier, four new holes have come into play whilst work is afoot to build more with the aim of making it a full 18 holes in the next few years.
Whilst work is ongoing, the 2019 version starts with a real toughie, a dog leg right par 4 where the marker is the only clue and just aim for this is the only answer. At the dogleg, the green then comes into view to the right, a hummucky affair and well protected. The 2nd is a delightful short par 3, whilst the 3rd has water in front of the tee and to the left. Whilst this shouldn't really come into play, it doesn't half prey on the mind. Another well moulded green where a par is a bonus, and then to the 4th, the last of the newly opened holes, this a level and then slightly down hill approach through well mounded humps. These four holes in truth are now the highlight of the course, and would not be out of place on any course.
Over the road and it is to five of the original course, and whilst all very playable, do not have the same "gee feel!" as the first 4. The present 6th is a bit of a quandry hole for an exacting tee shot needs to be played to get sight of the sloping green which is over water and very well protected by large trees. 7 & 8 are two respectable longinsh par 4's whilst the current 9th hole is a short, but good par 5 down a rolling fairway.
Overall, a pleasant full length 9 hole course, where, if the newer holes being built are as good as the present first 4, then, it will become a fine full 18 in time.

Friendly Course
Basset Down is a 9 Hole course that's not going to be the toughest challenge that you'll ever face. The fairways are mostly wide and welcoming, the bunkers are shallow and often hidden away to the sides of the greens, and if you play well then you're going to score well. There are a couple of holes that will make you think, like the 2nd where the tee shot has to be in the right spot on the fairway to give you a short shot to the green, or the 7th where your tee shot has to find a gap between trees and bushes. Generally though the course is fairly open and probably better suited to mid and high handicap players.
I didn't see the course at it's best thanks to a lot of rain that's fallen over the weekend, but I was surprised to see that the greens and tees handled it far better than a lot of courses that I've played recently.
I imagine that the course is one that looks a lot better once the trees get some leaves on them, but there are some nice views and I imagine that the greens will be very good once Spring eventually gets here.
I'd just like to add what a pleasant & friendly welcome I got both before and after my round in the clubhouse.
