What the club says: Gatton Manor offers a mature 18 hole woodland course, established in the late 1960s. At 6,600 yards the challenging course is championship length, the work of renowned Canadian golf architect, Commander John D Harris. No two holes are alike and the Commander has made imaginative use of streams, lakes, and tree-lined fairways.

They've worked really hard to bring the course back to where it was. Still got a bit further to go but great to see the effort being applied. Greens ran true and decent speed. Fairways is good condition. Well done

Duffer mc dufster

I have to say this is my new favourite course. So much character and variety. As a mid handicapper it is tougher than most I play. Hit it offline and you will be punished. Love the start. Longish par 4, par 3 on a slope and a challenging and tactical par 4. Each hole feels individual and in good nick. If I lived close would join. Feels like a bit of a hidden gem and has so much potential. Also friendly welcome. Very highly recommended.

Gatton, improving

We used to play here a lot then it changed hands , covid hit , people left , green fees went through the roof and the course condition became quite bad.
Now the good bits, a new owner who is slowly making improvements, greens are much better and the rough management is now proportionate ,ie miss the fairway by a little you'll find your ball ,else maybe not.
IMHO one of the best courses in Surrey/sussex for its layout, if you score well here you could score well anywhere. Some great risk/reward holes and some challenging tee shots.
There is a small basic driving range and practice green but the clubhouse is in the process of being remodelled.. with the reception now having a small bar. It's OK but not a place to spent a lot of time after a game having a drink and talking bs.

Place is "under renovation" (?!?), smacks of low level muni. Ladies at reception the best tho.

Recovery

Was a great course until covid and lack of maintenance spoiled it. The prices increased too. Most of the people I know who were members left. Except one.
So we played last week, a sneaky practice as we have a society day next week. The course is still a great course, a good layout with some tricky holes but now the fairways and greens are in good condition again.
The only annoyance is they have allowed to rough to grow, and in some places you can be a couple of feet from the fairway, and you can't find your ball. The semi is equally penal, as its just the right length that the ball sinks to the bottom of the grass, and you need to look down on it to find. It's not an easy course anyway and this but sometimes the punishment doesn't fit the crime now, and you spend too long looking, thus slowing pace of play. It's still one of the best courses around here IMHO, but it's a pain to get to and the facilities due to ongoing work aren't great.

Gem

After reading mixed reviews and finding this as a 'Gem' on the top 100 website, I wanted to play the course as the price seemed fairly cheap for the area.
I went out early 7.30am and was the first car in the parking lot. I hit the practice putting greens, I found them a little long if I'm being picky but the roll was true. I saw two greenskeepers who both waved and said good morning with a smile. The actual clubhouse/hotel looked just ever so slightly in need of some TLC from the outside but nice enough. The clubhouse looked closed so I went onto the first. The holes themselves are all interesting, making you think, requiring different shot shapes, with some strategic lay ups. There are a mix of holes, some fairly tight holes, some to open the shoulder up, some holes with blind tees shots, plenty of undulations and run offs into danger, water is fairly prominent. There are no hole layouts by the tees unfortunately, just the hole number itself. luckily I had an app on my phone which showed the hole layout. There was just a couple of holes which could of been sign posted a little better. The tee boxes were all in good condition, the fairways nice and green. The semi rough wasn't out of control and the greens were true paced all the way around. Some long par 4's and par 5's, as well as some that are reachable in two for the long hitters. A solid challenge for all levels of golfer in my opinion. Value for money is great and I will be definitely coming back with friends to play again now I have some course knowledge! This is a 'Gem' and with a little more TLC could become even better

Needs some TLC

They are renovating the clubhouse and money appears to be tight, just needs a bit more lawnmower for fairways and rough.

Good course and venue

Starting with the clubhouse - obviously this is a hotel course, so there is more to it than at a traditional golf club. The food was very enjoyable, everything was nice and clean although I felt the twin room I shared with a golf buddy was on the small side, but hardly any time was spent there, so it was adequate, and again clean and tidy. Locker/changing room was also on the small side, which could be a problem for larger groups. We were over 60 strong, and holding a shotgun start competition in support of MNDA. Didn't visit the Pro-shop, so can't comment there.

Moving on to the course - I was impressed with the layout, with very few holes being similar to each other, and some very interesting ones which I would hope to play better second time around - I think knowing where you are going here would help enormously. Tees, fairways and bunkers were all in good order, although the greens had been recently scarified, and had not fully recoveed - very similar to my home course, so I should have done a lot better! Pace of play was acceptable, but invariably with a shotgun start, a single 'lost ball' can knock back play for all competitors. "We never saw any greenkeeping staff, but that I'm sure was entirely down to the format we were playing. Clubhouse staff were very good, and the only comment I heard that was not complimentary was about a lack of uniforms, which meant it was not easy to identify who were staff and who were players!

Overall, I like the course, which I can recommend, and I will be happy to return to play again.

Hi Terry G,

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. On the whole, it sounds like you and your group enjoyed your experience with us. Unfortunately, your event timing coincided with our much-delayed autumn renovations so sadly the greens scaring hadn't had time to recover in time for your group. We do appreciate your understanding that this is something that is required on every golf course and sadly the weather this year impacted when we could do it.

We are investing heavily in the course and are pleased to hear you enjoyed the course conditions. The Greenskeepers led by our course manager will plan to stay out of the way of golfers when large groups have booked the course for the day. They tend to come in early and leave early to avoid interrupting your experience with us.

Thank you for pointing out staff uniforms, we agree that all our staff do require them. We are going through a rebrand which will include a revamp of the hotel and clubhouse internally. Staff uniforms will follow this process accordingly.

Thanks again for taking the time for this review, we look forward to welcoming you back soon.

A good challenge with fast greens and difficult fairways to hit .The greens are 2 and 3 tier so not easy to 2 putt on any of them when they are that fast

Beautiful Course. Worth a visit.

Tuck away in the Surrey countryside. No dud holes. They all have something about them. The course reveals itself one hole at a time. Really tough first three holes.
