What the club says: The 9 hole course gives the impression of a links course but is infact situated in the historical barn within the racecourse boundaries. The course was opened in 1994 and is an excellent test of golfers of all levels of ability.

Nice day

If you just want to get back in the swing of it this is the place to come not to much rough course well looked after greens are well kept and run well friendly staff definitely play again ????

Scenic, well maintained course

Great 9 hole course with the opportunity to play 18. Friendly clubhouse serving a selection of snacks and beverages.

This course is good fun to plan because the course has many different challenges with bunkers and long thick ruff

awful

Played a few times over the years and up to this last year, has always been just about OK. However, it really has fallen by the wayside with the introduction of Footgolf (never seen anyone actually playing it!) There seems to be absolutely no interest in golf from the owners (The jockey club) ans is now being run by the racecourse manager (of Exeter racecourse actually!) who has absolutely no idea whatsoever on running a golf course. not a friendly place at all and one that I will not be returning to.

Once good, now awful

Inside the racecourse therefore very flat. Certainly not mickey mouse with 4 very long holes of the nine. However, the management (The Jockey Club) seem hell bent on ruining a once fine club with draconian playing rules, an attitude of take it or leave it for both members and visitors, and with the greenkeeper seemingly bent on doing what I say or else! - Avoid at the moment, there are much more pleasant and enjoyable cubs around

Windy 9 hole

Nice 9 hole and always windy in middle of racecourse. Good condition course but is boring and samey.

Much improved since last review

Constructed in the early 90’s by the Racecourse owners, this was built with greens to full US spec. In the middle of the racecourse itself, it is completely flat, but being on the highest point around and no protection by trees, it can be one of the windiest places around. Built with huge (and oft unseen!) bunkers, many of these have now been reduced in size, but still pop up unannounced for the first time visitor!
Although only 9 holes, it certainly is no pushover, especially in a breeze and there are four holes on each circuit that the majority of players will be very unlikely to reach in two, and indeed the alternative tees for the back nine make the playing of the holes very different from the first circuit.
The course is inside the racecourse itself with the well signed entrance off the B3081 Wincanton to Bruton road. The car park is adequate and a short walk to a converted old barn which encloses the clubhouse and facilities. There is a small changing room upstairs, but it seems is little used, and the clubhouse has a limited selection of golf equipment and attire, whilst you can get a machine coffee, but very little else – lack of catering is certainly noticed, although all the equipment needed is all there in place.
The 1st (10th ) tee is a short walk in front of the clubhouse, and is quite a kind opener of 320 yards but it is not without a “1st tee nerves” panic area as any slice could easily go into the adjoining out of bounds practice range. The 10th tee is actually kinder as you are playing more parallel to the OOB. Played sensibly, this hole is a dogleg left with the best target from tee the marker in view, and certainly to the right of the small bush in view on the left. This will leave a short shot to the green, but be aware, the first of a number of “hidden” bunkers protect the front, and in fact will swallow up anything short. You will find for the first time today, that the greens are very good and true.
At the 2nd (11th) you are straight into the heart of the course, a strong 400 yard Par 4, more often into the prevailing wind, and getting onto the green here in two is a worthy achievement, and another where an large unseen bunker grabs mang a ball on the front left.
The 3rd and the 12th on the second circuit, are two very differing holes to play, - first time round, the yellows are well forward (40 yards) from the whites whilst on the 12th, this is a par 5 which can extend to nearly 500 yards and it is probably easier to par as the par 5 12th rather than the par 4 3rd. The drive needs to be left of the bunker in view on the right, this also taking you away from a depression on the right which often seems to remain as pretty thick rough. The green itself is tucked around the corner to the left, and yes, is again protected by a large and unseen bunker.
Like the hole before, the 4th and 13th are very different in playing, the first time being a short par 4 of 261 yards, whilst second time as 13th is longer, but has the added problem of virtually playing as a dog leg right, or at least with fade to keep away from the practise area and OOB on the right.
The 5th is the first of the par 3’s, 168 yards as the 5th, and just 126 as the 14th. Hitting the green from the 5th is often a tough ask, especially into a breeze, and with bunkers left and right, 4 can be a happy score.
The 6th (335 yards) and 15th (301 yards) is a straight forward par 4, but care needed not to hook as the race track is quite close on the left, whilst a hollow and bunker on the left can also gobble up a drive, and then we reach the longest hole on the course, the 7th a par 5 which plays as a very strong par 4 as the 16th. It is a bit of a wham bang thankyou ma’am hole and played as a three shotter, can usually bring rewards.
The 8th / 16th is another long par 4 and even with a kind wind is tough one to hit in two, which leads on to the final hole, a par 3 that plays long at nearly 200 yards the second time around, just what you want when you need a par to win a match.
Postcript view.
A testing but flat 9 hole course, very wind affected, but with excellent greens and a course that will test every club in your bag. Shame about the lack of clubhouse facilities, but there are a number of eateries and pubs in the town itself, and a large Marstons eaterie abeam the A303.

A nice course tucked away in Somerset

We had a day out at Wincanton and although it is only a 9 hole we were very pleasently surprised. Well worth a visit if you are looking for somewhere different.
