Why Morocco Has Become an Emerging Golf Travel Destination
Golfers worldwide make the pilgrimage to the UK and Ireland to experience legendary links courses, while those of us from these islands often take a trip across to Continental Europe and destinations such as Portugal and Spain to sample the game in a more reliably appealing climate.
These places are long established in the minds of golfers, drawing many thousands of visitors each year, but some new locations are emerging, becoming an alternative hotspot for keen travellers to discover.
You might not have considered Morocco for a golf break before, but our travel partners Golfbreaks have reported that an increasing number of you are making this journey to North Africa and returning with memories to last a lifetime.
There are only around 40 golf courses located in the country, but the quality is outstanding, with the majority of them being found in the historic metropolis of Marrakech and the coastal city of Agadir.

What Makes Morocco Special
When you think of Morocco, you will probably have images of its stunning architecture, distinctive history, spectacular landscapes and rich culture, not to mention its renowned cuisine.
The Atlas Mountains are extraordinary, while much of the Sahara Desert spans across the country. You also have many remarkable cities to explore, including the famous port city of Casablanca, the Red City of Marrakech, the fascinating Fes, and the mountain town of Chefchaouen.
It's clear to see why Morcocco captivates visitors - but what can it offer golfers?
Golf Courses & Resorts
Just a four-hour flight from the UK, Marrakech is an accessible destination, and it's a surprising hub for golf. The city is an exciting place to explore, while the courses to play here include Assoufid Golf Club (See Golfshake's Review), The Montgomerie Marrakech Golf Club, Fairmont Royal Palm Golf & Country Club, and Royal Golf Marrakech Old Course, which our review described as a "a great, short course that is suitable for all abilities. The course is in good condition and is such an enjoyable layout to play. You may also a variety of wildlife whilst you’re playing - we were lucky enough to see a family of impalas who were intrigued by our putting! Not only is the course fantastic, the overall facilities are too and it’s not difficult to lose yourself here for the entire day."
Known for its busy markets and sunny beaches, Agadir is a coastal city that is growing in popularity - and it has a feast for golfers too. The courses you can play here include Golf Les Dunes, Golf Du Soleil, Taghazout Bay Golf Course, and Golf de l'Ocean.
A port city, Essaouira is just a couple of hours from Marrakech where you will find Sofitel Essaouira Mogador Golf & Spa, which is an intoxicating resort that is home to Gary Player's Golf de Mogador. Fans of Game of Thrones will recognise some of the locations in the city as scenes from the series were shot there.
Situated to the south of Casablanca, El Jadida was originally a coastal fortress built by the Portuguese in the 16th century but is now a seaside hub that has become a major attraction. If you stay in the Mazagan Beach Resort, you will find another visually striking Gary Player-designed course.
When Should You Visit?
You won't be surprised to hear that the summer in Morocco is scorching hot, and winter can be extremely cold in some places, so the optimal time for a holiday - and especially a golf-themed one - is the springtime and autumn months (March to May or September to November), where you can benefit from more pleasant temperatures that won't entirely melt your spirits when out on the course!
