Is There More Golf in The Algarve Than You Thought
Guest article by student sports journalist Fin Tait.
The Algarve in Portugal is a well renowned hot spot for golf in the sun all year round. However, what you might not know is how many courses and resorts there are aside from the well-known ones, such as courses around Vilamoura. Following the stunning Atlantic Coast west towards Albufeira, you'll find some stunning world-class courses and resorts perfect for your next golfing holiday. Here’s a few we recommend.
Salgados Golf
Situated in one of the most scenic regions of the Algarve, between Albufeira and Armacao de Pera Salgados, this course follows links style play. Accuracy is crucial here, with several water hazards around the course. The course was renovated in 2012 and has been kept in top quality condition since. This is the perfect course for golfers looking to test their accuracy. It's just a short 15-minute drive from Albufeira as well.
Amendoeira Golf Resort
Tucked away in the scenery of the Monchique Mountains and a short drive away from the sandy coastline, Amendoeira is the perfect resort for golfers looking for relaxation and top vibes. Right on the doorstep is the Faldo Course and O’Connor Course, two of Portugal's most highly rated courses. Offering a mix of modern apartments and relaxing villas, a stay in this estate is a great option for golfers wanting to relax in the Portuguese sun.
Boavista Golf & Spa Resort
Providing a high quality 18-hole championship course fit for professionals, as well as other top-of-the-range facilities to keep you occupied during your stay, Boavista is also located within short drives of other top class golf courses in Western Algarve, such as Palmares and Espiche Golf Course.
Palmares Golf Club
Ranked at 26th in Europe's top 100 golf courses, this is a must play for all golfers visiting Portugal. Several holes run along dunes of the Atlantic Coast, with a modern clubhouse providing perfect views of the surrounding area - perfect for that post-round-pint. With multiple options to stay in the Beach House Hotel or the signature apartments, Palmares is a must.
Espiche Golf Club
Espiche Golf Club offers a 72-par parkland course, offering the perfect taste of golf in the Algarve right from the first tee. With many iconic and scenic holes, as well as a steady challenge, the risk and reward factor is very present throughout the course. The hilliness of the course brings the course to life, with elevated tee boxes and greens, giving the course a real challenge.
Vale Da Pinta Golf Club
Since opening its doors in 1992, Vale Da Pinta has always held a high reputation for its well maintained condition all year round. With imported Bermuda grass, these fairways are some of the best you can find in the Algarve. This course is known as one of the best in the Carvoeiro area.
Getting There
The quickest route to the Algarve and to Albufeira would be flying to Faro. The best airports to get a direct flight from the UK to Faro are Gatwick, Stansted, Manchester, Bristol, Luton and Birmingham, all having regular direct flights. The short flight takes around 3-hours meaning more time soaking in the sun.
Best Time to Visit
For comfortable golf temperatures, May, June and July are the best months to visit, with temperatures averaging around the mid 20s. As well as the comfortable temperature, the sun will still be shining and the kids will still be in school, allowing for perfect relaxation by the pool and minimal crowds. If the sun and heat is what you seek, August is the time for you, with an average of temperature of around 30 degrees!
There are just a few things you need to consider before booking your next golf break to the Algarve. Be sure to book through Golfbreaks for the best and latest offers on holidays!
