Why You Should Play Golf in Tunisia
During a visit to the country two years ago, Golfshake's Travel Editor Andy Waple posed the question: "It’s hardly top of everybody’s wish list for a golf break abroad, but is Tunisia the next destination to woo players from the UK and Europe?"
The answer seems to be a resounding yes, as there are ten courses in the country with more planned for construction. Located in North Africa and resting alongside the Mediterranean Sea, the climate here is known for its hot summers and warm winters, meaning that it could be the ideal destination to visit during the cooler months back home.
Hammamet and the tourist complex of Port El Kantaoui are the two likely destinations for golfers, as they present a variety of fabulous hotels and sandy beaches to luxuriate in alongside tremendous courses.
Our travel partners, Golfbreaks offer a range of attractive deals and packages, but if you want to know more about the places you can discover and experience during a golf holiday in Tunisia, we have all the information you need below!
The Golf Courses
The coastal town of Hammamet is considered to be one of the tourist hotspots in Tunisia, being renowned for its beaches and water sports, but there is also something for golfers to enjoy in the form of the Championship Course at Yasmine Golf Club, which is a visually striking and brilliantly designed layout that should captivate players of all standards.
Golf Citrus is another standout in the area that has been designed in a style that resembles some of the finest courses in Portugal or Spain, with undulating fairways, trees and water being a prominent feature throughout.
We also mentioned Port El Kantaoui, which is found to the south of Hammamet and lies adjacent to the city of Sousse. The Sea Course and Panorama Course at El Kantaoui Golf Club are both worth a visit themselves, as they each deliver a thrilling and contrasting test for golfers, with the former offering spectacularly scenic holes that have been constructed alongside the coastline, while the latter is a shorter but challenging layout with water hazards and deep bunkers to catch you out.
You may not have previously thought of playing golf in Tunisia, and it continues to battle for a profile against more established destinations like Portugal, Spain and Turkey, but the quality of the courses here is undeniably outstanding.
The Hotels & Resorts
If the layouts you can sample here are great, then the accommodation is arguably even better. There are all-inclusive and half-board options to choose from, including the five-star Iberostar Selection Kantaoui Bay Hotel, which offers access to one of Tunisia's finest beaches. The spa and health centre completes the sense of relaxation that you can settle into here.
Also in El Kantaoui, Seabel Alhambra Beach Golf & Spa is surrounded by Mediterranean Olive trees and grasslands, making it a tranquil environment from which to base yourself and play the nearby courses.
Returning to Hammamet, Iberostar Waves Averroes is a four-star beachfront resort that is close to the brilliant Golf Citrus complex. This is an elegantly designed hotel that also benefits from an outdoor pool, spa, outdoor sports area, tennis court and fitness centre.
For a real taste of luxury, The Sindbad is rated highly for its elegant rooms and suites, an infinity swimming pool, and direct beach access, which means you can enjoy the climate and chill out when you've had a break from the golf course and exploring the local attractions.
Other Attractions to See
Speaking of which, there is a lot to consume during a holiday in Tunisia. The Amphitheatre of El Jem is a UNESCO World Heritage site, giving you the chance to gaze across the ruins of the largest colosseum in North Africa, which connects you to the history of the Roman Empire.
The capital city, Tunis, has much to offer, including the Bardo National Museum that is full of ancient and diverse artifacts that rank alongside the most fascinating on the continent.
As we've commented earlier, the beaches along the coastline are famous and are perfect for those who love to rest in the sunshine or gaze out across the blue of the sea.
How to Get There
There are more direct flights to Tunisia these days, with travel available from UK cities like London and Manchester to Tunis, Enfidha and Monastir, with an average flight time of three hours, meaning that it's an accessible country to reach with much to like when you get there.
