The Best Regions For Golf in Spain

By: Kieran Clark | Wed 16 Oct 2024

Spain has long been a huge draw with golfers from across Europe and beyond - there are around 400 courses to choose from - with the climate, accessibility and quality of its layouts being attractive to those who want to play immaculately conditioned designs in superb weather.

But what are the best regions in the country to experience? There is a vast expanse of land to explore in Spain, but there are standouts that should hold a place in the hearts and minds of golfers.

We have deferred to our travel partners, Golfbreaks, who have identified eight locations in particular that are worth a visit - or two!

Costa del Sol

Costal del Sol

The Costa del Sol covers a significant part of southern Spain and overlooks the Mediterranean Sea, with its coastal towns and many beaches being a notable feature that has made it an iconic destination for those travelling from the UK. Some refer to it as the 'Costa del Golf' - and for very good reason - as there are over 70 courses here to discover.

Including the likes of Ryder Cup venue Valderrama, Solheim Cup host Finca CortesinLa Quinta and La Reserva, the layouts here are just as challenging as they are beautiful, making them a standout for keen golfers.

Costa Blanca

Las Colinas

On the southeastern coastline in the province of Alicante, the Costa Blanca is another jewel and is home to places such as Valencia and Benidorm, underling that it possesses strong tourist credentials.

It also offers an inspiring list of golf courses and resorts, including La Finca Golf and Las Colinas Golf & Country Club, not to mention the renowned El Saler that ranks alongside the finest in Continental Europe.

Murcia

Murcia

If you love to have the sun on your back when playing golf, then you'll relish Murcia, where there are 300 days of sunshine per year, with the heat being carried into the evenings too, as the nightlife is popular here as well.

But for golfers, the appeal is obviously showcased through the likes of La Manga Club, the Jack Nicklaus-designed Alhama, and the testing La Torre that can offer a stern examination from the back tees.

Costa de la Luz

Costa de la Luz

Part of the Andalusian coastline, the Costa de la Luz encompasses the city of Cadiz and stretches to the border with Portugal. Easy to reach from the likes of Faro, Seville and even Gibraltar, there is a lot to explore beyond the golf, including the beaches, historic towns and delicious local cuisine.

But what about the courses? We can point you in the direction of Montecastillo - designed by Jack Nicklaus - in addition to the likes of El Rompido and Islantilla.

Costa Brava

Costa Brava

Located to the north of Barcelona, you can explore the culture and history of Catalonia on the Costa Brava, while playing layouts such as the Stadium Course at PGA CamiralReal Club de Golf El PratEmporda Golf and Golf de Pals.

Beaches and coastal resorts are plentiful here, and the weather makes it ideal for a golf holiday.

Costa Dorada

Costa Dorada

Also part of Catalonia, located to the south of Barcelona, Costa Dorada translates to Golden Coast, and that name is a recognition of the stunningly golden beaches that you will discover here.

Golfers will love the two courses at Infinitum Golf & Beach Club - which has regularly staged the DP World Tour's Q-School - and they are constantly searching for improvement. We recommend reading our recent review of this fantastic destination.

Almeria

Almeria

On the southeastern coast and benefitting from a Mediterranean climate that has led to Almeria becoming known as the Arizona of Europe, the dry humidity is a feature of this region that is celebrated for its ancient villages and rugged landscapes.

The course at Valle del Este is arguably the golfing highlight here, as the layout features wide fairways and deep bunkers to test you, but also boasts raised tees surrounded by volcanic rock to captivate you, all of which makes for a unique experience.

Canary Islands

Canary Islands

Finally, we're taking you away from mainland Spain and towards the direction of the Canary Islands! Whether it be Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, or Fuerteventura, you can't go wrong with your choice of island as the courses are exceptional, the weather is embracing, and the volcanic landscapes are enthralling.
