Transformed Golf Courses That You Must Play

By: Kieran Clark | Fri 04 Oct 2024

The best golf courses are always looking for ways to improve themselves, and it's not something that goes unnoticed by visitors when they reflect on their experiences at the venue.

Whether it be recruiting new greenkeepers, introducing fresh investment into the facilities, or even just marketing themselves better and enhancing their reputation, these are golf courses that have subtly transformed themselves in recent times.

That - at least - is what some golfers believe as reviews have expressed delight at just how much things have improved for a variety of reasons.

Here are a selection of golf courses that should now be on your list to play!

Chilworth Golf Club

Location: Southampton, Hampshire

Golfshake Rating: 3.72

Review Comment: "Huge Improvement. Just played here after being away a few years and must say that the course is looking lush. Great mix of holes adding variety for all types of golfers."

Cobtree Manor Golf Club

Cobtree Manor

Location: Maidstone, Kent

Golfshake Rating: 3.59

Review Comment: "The course was busy, which in my opinion speaks volumes. Speaking with regulars they say the course had improved immensely."

Cleeve Hill Golf Club

Location: Cheltenham, Gloucestershire

Golfshake Rating: 4.24

Review Comment: "First time for me at Cleeve Hill. I couldn't believe that it faced closure just a few years ago. Old Tom's layout stands the test of time in all weathers - yes, we had all four seasons during our round. Wonderful elevated tees and few bushes and trees offer the novel experience, for me, of being able to find your ball fairly easily. We finished in glorious sunshine elated but exhausted!"

Duxbury Park Golf Club

Duxbury Park

Location: Chorley, Lancashire

Golfshake Rating: 3.95

Review Comment: "Condition wise it just keeps getting better and better. It's a good test of golf, but not too hard. Look for the three holes over water, 6, 10 and 12. Probably the three standout holes on the course."

Feldon Valley Golf Club

Feldon Valley

Location: Sutton Lane, Oxfordshire

Golfshake Rating: 4.46

Review Comment: "Haven’t played it for a while. Much improvement. Clubhouse was excellent. Very friendly."

Huntswood Golf Club

Location: Slough, Buckinghamshire

Golfshake Rating: 4.02

Review Comment: "I come to this course at least twice a year and it keeps improving. Huntswood have done a lot of improvements and they have done a great job. Overall a great little course, not very long but well worth a visit. Great clubhouse too."

Ingestre Park Golf Club

Location: Stafford, Staffordshire

Golfshake Rating: 4.34

Review Comment: "Fantastic new course layout. Well worth a visit with the combination of the link style holes along with the old parkland course, Ingestre is a refreshing challenge. Great staff, good food, a must visit, will definitely play again."

Kings Golf Club

Kings Golf Club Inverness

Location: Inverness, Highlands

Golfshake Rating: 4.00

Review Comment: "Fantastic course worth visiting. Since my last review there has been a new greenkeeper and the transformation to the course is unbelievable and the improvement in the greens are worth trying out for yourself."

Kirkby Valley Golf Club

Location: Liverpool, Merseyside

Golfshake Rating: 3.74

Review Comment: "This course has vastly improved over the last few years and a real pleasure to play."

Sharpley Golf Centre

Location: Seaham, County Durham

Golfshake Rating: 4.43

Review Comment: "Fantastic course keeps getting better as it gets older! Great course, interesting greens and a great day out!"

Sherdley Park Golf Course

Sherdley Park

Location: St Helens, Merseyside

Golfshake Rating: 3.59

Review Comment: "I haven’t played here since before it got renovated, I liked the back nine and the improvements/changes they have made. They have done well to keep 6, 7, 8 and 9 as they were though, it was always a good little run of holes, so well done."

Sunningdale Heath Golf Club

Location: Sunningdale, Berkshire

Golfshake Rating: 3.80

Review Comment: "One of the most welcoming and friendly clubs I have ever been to. The staff are great and the course is both challenging and beautiful. Short, yes, but interesting and well kept, the facilities improving all the time under the new owners."

The Darenth

The Darenth

Location: Sevenoaks, Kent

Golfshake Rating: 3.67

Review Comment: "Work around the course pays off. The continual improvements to the course make this a delight to play."
