The Best Golf Courses to Play in Angus

By: Kieran Clark | Wed 24 Jul 2024

Angus is a council region in eastern Scotland that borders Aberdeenshire, Dundee City and Perth & Kinross. Golfers will be aware of the legendary Carnoustie, home to the fearsome Championship Course, which is one of the finest and most testing layouts in the UK.

But there is far more to golf in this part of the country than just Carnoustie, as you will quickly uncover other classic seaside designs alongside parkland courses that are dotted around further inland.

However, where should you play if you are passing through this area? We have gazed into the Golfshake Course Section and discovered that so many venues in Angus are Highly Recommended!

We have also included places that are located in and around Dundee, which while technically are not part of Angus, they feel like an essential extension of the story.

Here are some brilliant courses that you must experience!

Review Comment: "A gem of a course. A terrific golf challenge next to the Carnoustie Championship Course. Subtle greens, well positioned bunkers, and the course in great condition despite the recent wet weather."

Piperdam

Location: Fowlis, Dundee

Golfshake Rating: 4.56

Green Fees: New Course (£35), Wee Piper Course (£15)

Review Comment: "Make sure this is on your list. A lovely course just outside Dundee. Lovely course with some dangerous holes if you are not careful. I would certainly recommend this if you are in the area."

Monifieth Golf Club

Monifieth Golf Club

Location: Princes Street, Monifieth

Golfshake Rating: 4.48

Green Fees: Medal (£125), Ashludie (£55)

Review Comment: "Monifieth Medal course is a fabulous links test of golf. Lots of undulating fairways, plenty of the typical links type bunkers, and true, fast running greens. This fantastic course is well worth a visit."

Kirriemuir Golf Club

Kirriemuir Golf Club

Location: Northmuir, Kirriemuir

Golfshake Rating: 4.39

Green Fees: From £30

Review Comment: "Kirriemuir is well worth a visit, not too long, even off the white tips. However, difficult little track, if it’s your first visit, try to play with a knowledgeable local. Some strange bounces, if you are not careful. Well worth the trip, and, great value, followed by fantastic food in the clubhouse."

Downfield Golf Club

Downfield Golf Club

Location: Turnberry Avenue, Dundee

Golfshake Rating: 4.31

Green Fees: From £80

Review Comment: "Everything about the experience was spot on from welcome, arrival to the course, the clubhouse staff. Recommend it to anyone, tough course for beginners but would say a worthwhile place to visit."

Forfar Golf Club

Forfar Golf Club

Location: Arbroath Road, Forfar

Golfshake Rating: 4.28

Green Fees: From £59

Review Comment: "This is an inland course that is an excellent test of skill and placement. Several holes you are hitting blind so have to manoeuvre rather than driver out and bash it down the middle. Very rolling fairways so depends which way your ball will roll when it hits the ground. Made to feel very welcome in both the pro shop and the club afterwards. We sat and had a drink out on the benches on the outside area by the 18th green. Very relaxing after the round to chat and chill. Overall, give it a try and you will not be disappointed."

Arbroath Golf Links

Location: Elliot, Arbroath

Golfshake Rating: 4.24

Green Fees: From £80

Review Comment: "We had an amazing package for the day. Coffee and bacon roll on arrival. Soup and sandwiches for lunch and then a two course dinner after playing 36 holes. An amazing flat course that plays lovely as long as the weather stays fair. Some great holes and I would recommend this anytime to anyone. Some great par 3s that are not the easiest to hit and stay on. Overall a fantastic day and agreed by all ten of us on the day."

Brechin Golf Club

Brechin Golf Club

Location: Trinity, Brechin

Golfshake Rating: 4.11

Green Fees: From £50

Review Comment: "Superb value. Great little parkland course. In condition typical for time of year (lots of leaves) but greens were nice and course played well and very friendly and helpful staff."

Montrose Golf Links

Montrose Golf Links

Location: Traill Drive, Montrose

Golfshake Rating: 4.07

Green Fees: 1562 Course (£90), Broomfield (£30)

Review Comment: "First time playing this wonderful links course. Was very impressed with the magnificent setting giving fabulous sea, town and country views while challenging your golfing ability over difficult bunkers, sea grass and some intimidating greens."

Caird Park Golf Course

Location: Mains Loan, Dundee

Golfshake Rating: 3.45

Green Fees: From £24.20

Review Comment: "Good condition and a fair test of golf for the average player. Would recommend for someone getting into golf and looking for a relatively inexpensive option."
