Why You Should Visit South Africa on Your Next Golf Break

By: Liam Moore | Wed 29 Nov 2023

South Africa is a bucket-list destination for many golfers, yet plenty believe it’s out of their price range – which isn’t true!

The country offers a varied test of golf and each destination provides something completely different from the other.

Of course, there are a multitude of activities to complement the golf, which is why South Africa is a must visit for all golfers.

Whether you want to embrace Cape Town’s culture or escape in the Garden Route, South Africa is littered with fascinating vistas and world-class golf courses.

Arabella Golf Club South Africa

Cape Town

Cape Town is the legislative capital of South Africa and a very lively place, which will please thrill-seekers who are looking for an action-packed holiday. The ideal time to visit Cape Town is between the months of December and March, which provides an idyllic golfing climate. Flights to and from Cape Town are easily booked, but please expect an elongated flight as the flight time from London is 11 hours and 35 minutes.

An abundance of golf courses can be found in and around Cape Town, and it’s often referred to as the golfing capital of South Africa. Venues such as the Arabella Hotel, Golf & Spa and Erinvale Golf Course are easily accessible from Cape Town. Furthermore, a collection of stunning hotels can act as the ideal base for your stay in the region: The Table Bay Hotel, The Commodore Hotel, Vineyard Hotel and Steenberg Hotel are all located within the local vicinity.

Durban

Durban Country Club

Located on the eastern coast of South Africa, Durban’s sub-tropical climate makes year-round golf a real possibility. The entire country is known for its breathtaking landscapes and all courses found in Durban live up to that expectation. If you’re someone who loves a view with their golf, Durban will seldom be beaten as the stunning countryside attracts worldwide golfers every day. Unfortunately, there are no direct flights to Durban and you will require a connecting flight, but the journey is more than worth it.

The Durban Country Club is one of the best golf courses to reside in South Africa, let alone Durban. Its championship course is home to otherworldly views and provides a hefty challenge to any golfers who take it on. Alternatively, the Zimbali Country Club is another top-class offering that places a premium on accuracy from the tee. The Capital Zimbali and The Oyster Box are the two leading accommodation options, both of which exude the classy style that is associated with South African golf.

Sun City

Sun City Lost City

Situated on the edge of Pilanesberg National Park, Sun City is a lush and beautiful location that you simply must experience for yourself. Routed through endless forest, the highly esteemed resort is home to two outstanding golf courses. It must be noted that Sun City is one of South Africa’s most exclusive resorts but the level of hospitality and fun golfers receive is honestly endless. If you’re looking to fly out for the DP World Tour events in South Africa, then Sun City is a fantastic base for you to travel from.

The Gary Player Course plays host to the Nedbank Golf Tournament, and it’s one of the longest golf courses on the tour’s rota. Golfers can expect a firm challenge with testing hazards, bunkers, blind shots and outrageous carries over water. On the other hand, the Lost City Course is easier and suitable for a wide range of golfers yet will still hold the difficulty that better players are seeking. Perhaps the greatest element of golfing at Sun City is the varied wildlife that live on the premises – just be wary of those Nile crocodiles!

Garden Route

The Garden Route could be the most beautiful place in South Africa, which is a very big statement. Nestled on the south coast lies the Garden Route and its awe-inspiring setting. The area is home to many golf courses – including one of the leading layouts, Fancourt Links – and fantastic resorts that can accommodate many golfers at once. Alongside the reputable courses are resorts such as Pinnacle Point Beach & Golf Resort and Oubaai Golf Resort & Spa – both of which offer an incredibly luxurious stay.

Golfing in this rich area of South Africa will not leave you disappointed; through a multitude of brilliant golf courses, the Garden Route offers varied experiences across its land. Fancourt Hotel & Golf Estate is often referred to as one of South Africa’s best, and the relatively flat landscape welcomes gusting winds. The Montagu Course at Fancourt plays slightly easier but the prevailing winds remain. Additional clubs include Goose Valley Golf Club, Mossel Bay Golf Club, Plettenberg Bay Country Club, Simola Golf & Country Estate and Humewood Golf Club.
