Why Gran Canaria Should Be Your Next Golf Holiday Destination
The second most populated of the Canary Islands, Gran Canaria has become a hugely popular, year-round destination for golfers travelling from the UK and the rest of Europe who are keen to discover this spectacular part of the world that is known for its volcanic origin, picturesque views and luxury golf courses.
Handily, it's conveniently just a four-hour flight from most airports in Britain, with plenty of accommodation available all offering short transfers to the golf courses. Another thing that makes Gran Canaria so attractive is the appealing temperature, which is consistent without ever becoming searingly hot. Mountainous regions can be a touch cool, but an average winter daytime temperature of 20 degrees is more than enough to offset that. That figure rises to 22 degrees in spring and 27 degrees in the height of summer. June, July and August are normally rainless, and, as a consequence, the population swells as tourists flock to the island to experience these reliably perfect conditions.
That makes Gran Canaria a real draw for visitors whatever the season, but the winter offering in particular makes it a treat, especially with the stunning beaches and cosmopolitan nightlife thrown in too.

The Courses
Scattered across Gran Canaria, there are venues like Real Club de Golf de Las Palmas, the scenic Salobre Hotel Resort & Serenity and the coastal Lopesan Meloneras Golf Course, all of which offer a memorable experience to keen golfers.
Talk about dramatic, Real Club de Golf de Las Palmas is located in the crater of an extinct volcano! The vistas here are exceptional, but so is the layout, which presents a challenging range of holes that will make for a feast of the senses.
The Salobre Hotel & Resort is home to a pair of fine courses, Old 'The Beauty' and New 'The Beast', both of which are set in a breathtaking layout with some tremendous holes carved into the natural desert rock.
Running along the coastline, Meloneras Golf Course is set right next to the ocean with the Canary mountains on one side and the harbour of Pasito Blanco on the other. The beautiful surroundings combine with an excellent course to deliver a truly memorable experience.
Additionally, the 18-hole championship course at Anfi Tauro Golf Club is positioned within acres of lush green gardens with rich vegetation, lakes, and waterfalls and enclosed by impressive volcano-shaped peaks. Campo de Golf de Maspalomas is a par-73 parkland design that is bordered by dunes that separate it from the sea, while El Cortijo Club de Campo has previously been a host to events on the European Tour, completing this delectable selection of courses in Gran Canaria.
The Hotels
Within Gran Canaria, there are many accommodation options available, but we take a closer look at just some of the standout establishments to choose from.
You've heard about the two courses at Salobre Hotel Resort & Serenity, and they take good care of you too here. It features 313 rooms in eight different styles, all of which have been designed to provide a modern Mediterranean feel and feature some incredible views of the surrounding area. Located only 30 minutes from Las Palmas Airport, there is the private Beach Point in Maspalomas (free shuttle service) which is only 100m away from the beach with changing rooms, lockers and showers.
Ideal for groups, families and couples, Seaside Sandy Beach is located alongside Playa del Ingles beach and is home to 256 varied rooms that cater for everyone. The shopping centres, bars and nightlife of Playa del Ingles are within walking distance, while the golf courses of Maspalomas and Meloneras are just a 10-minute taxi ride away.
Another notable possibility is the striking Gran Hotel Lopesan Villa del Conde, a 5* beachfront hotel built in traditional Canarian style. Each of the 561 rooms enjoy spectacular views of either the garden or the ocean and it is just 45 minutes from Las Palmas Airport.
The Destination
When you consider the climate, excellent courses and wonderful accommodation - not to mention the accessibility - then it's easy to see why Gran Canaria is becoming a must-visit for many golfers looking for something unforgettable.
