Telford Golf & Spa Hotel is located in the beautiful rolling Shropshire Hills. Owned by the Q Hotels group, this is a venue which combines a beautiful parkland golf course with excellent amenities and service in the hotel. The venue has had over £10m invested in it over recent years so Golfshake sent Ambassador Rob Treanor along to experience the full range of facilities at the resort.

Golf

The par 72 course has played host to professional tour events with the likes of Ian Woosnam amongst previous victors. Such accolades provide an inkling as to the level of challenge the course presents; with mature trees and a vast array of sand meaning anything offline is suitably punished. The greens are outstanding (sharing design features with Augusta National) and there is plenty of drama with water and elevation changes to contend with. A superb slingshot of holes from eight to thirteen will mean that a round here gathers pace quickly and lives long in the memory.

Accommodation

The hotel has genuinely excellent leisure facilities including a large pool, events and conference facilities as well as a superb restaurant and bar. Given the brand the hotel is owned by, you can expect outstanding customer service from the moment you check in!

There is a selection of room options ranging from a handful of (modernised) bedrooms in the original building which dates back to pre-1593. The complex has 114 bedrooms in total meaning this is a hotel that can cater for groups of any size.

Food & Drink

To offer a sense of the level of dining on offer; dinner in the hotel’s excellent 1779 restaurant began with warm bread and three accompanying flavoured butters. The attention to detail in ensuring freshly warmed bread and the flair in the butter flavouring set the scene for what is a treat for the taste buds!

The rest of the menu is equally appealing with unusual options such as tandoori lamb complementing more traditional burgers. There are also plenty of fish and options for vegetarian guests, showing that this is a well thought out menu which is designed to cater for all tastes. The new cocktail menu is not to be missed, particularly for those who favour nostalgia, as there are some inventive accompaniments such as popping candy which make the drink a real experience!

The hotel bar is well equipped with good seating areas and is a very smart space to relax in. Guests can enjoy a drink or a light bite and you are sure to be well looked after by the excellent and attentive staff.

The golf club has it’s own recently renovated clubhouse too which has an outdoor terrace which is perfect for enjoying a post round refreshment. As well as a full range of drinks there are hot and cold snacks and light bar meals if that takes your fancy.

Spa

Often at venues of this type, the spa is an afterthought but this is definitely not the case at Telford Golf Hotel & Spa. The pool area is lit with luxurious mood lighting and features very good facilities. The large pool means that guests don’t feel crammed in when enjoying a swim and in addition there is a steam room, sauna, experience shower, heated loungers and an ice fountain to enjoy.

If you have more energy to burn off then a good sized gym and dance studio are also on hand though this writer found the temptation of the resort’s more leisurely pursuits too tempting to turn down!

Getting There & Nearby Activities

The cities of Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool are nearby, making this a very accessible venue to get to. The landscape of the surrounding Shropshire Hills are a designated are of outstanding natural beauty. The famous iron bridge is just a few miles away and there is a wealth of family days out to be had at the many local attractions.
