Hard pin positions
I really enjoyed my day out here. This was a reciprocal arrangement with the Forest of Dean golf club. This course is superb, I would happily play this course again in a heart beat.
Holes are generally straight on this course, some nice differences with length of par 4s, some are reachable for longer hitters, however I felt the wiser play was to tee off with a long iron to guarantee and attacking wedge shot. Greens were highly receptive to a high spinning ball flight. A couple of par 4s are also monstrous and are probably better off played as par 5s. Four par 5s were all nice to play but I felt the nicest holes on this course were the splendid par 3s. Hole 5 over the stone wall and hole 14 which had views to the west were particularly memorable.
Fairways are surrounded by young and older trees with OoB on some holes so a careful tee shot is probably more important than absolute POWER! The rough was very fair by punishing you with chipping out of trees rather than a lost ball in long grass which is something I personally appreciate. The course has many well maintained bunkers, both on the fairways and protecting the interestingly odd shaped greens .
The greens were superb, despite the heavy rain this week they rolled with really good pace, I would imagine in the summer they would be very quick. The pin positions were tucked into some very awkward corners of the greens next to the edge of sharp down slopes running off the greens. Talking to members this is common occurrence for their competitions. If the previous weather had been dry I imagine I would be walking off with a very different score as this would have been extremely tough putting.
My only slight niggle with the course layout was how many of the holes require you to walk backdown the fairway to the next tee and the tee is positioned where a stray ball from the previous hole could easily spoil your day. I feel these holes could do with a path to guide golfers out of the way of the group behind & stray ball protection at the tee.
This course has a spectacular view looking west over Keynsham & Bristol. We saw the Severn bridge and I'm convinced that I saw the faint shadow of May Hill near Gloucester, so it is worth stopping and admiring the view at 14/15.
Staff and members we spoke to were all really helpful.
The bar served Thatchers Gold Dry which is better than you get at most golf clubs, if you're a cider drinker like me.

Not a bad course at all
Decent course with some long par fours and four par fives. Some of the longer holes a bit featureless, long and open but a few real excellent holes, including two lovely par threes. Forgiving, but long.Reviewer Rating

Friendly members
A flat course but made difficult by the amount of out of bounds. Always the wind will play a large part in your score.(Round played: Oct 2019 - Score: 82 Handicap: 9.7)

Excellent facilities
The members are very friendly, the course although flat can be quite challenging. The front nine tends to be easier than the back nine, however overall more challenging than you may think. You have to be accurate as there are many out of bounds from the tees. Very reasonably priced drinks and food which is excellent quality. Chris behind the bar is extremely efficient and very helpful.Reviewer Rating
