What the club says: The course consists of 18 holes designed by the 5 times Open Champion James Braid. It has a par of 70 with a length of 6,357 yards. There is no doubt it is one of the best Essex courses, situated just north of the town and five minutes from the A12. The fast running fairways lined with mature trees and firs provide a wonderful test of golf. The four par threes and two par fives mean scoring below 70 is more difficult than it might seem at first. Possibly the greatest threat to the unwary golfer comes in the form of tightly bunkered approaches to small subtly contoured greens.

Average challenge
The course is well maintained, the greens usually in super condition, its not hugely difficult but you are guaranteed a decent round. Will you be enthralled, find anything unique, play any particularly memorable holes? Not really. It is a typical high end members club - woe betide you wear the wrong socks or your shirt is untucked - but the course itself, while in good condition, will probably not have you desperate to come back.Reviewer Rating

Very nice
Course is still recovering from this years drenching. Fairways were a bit fluffy, rough was very tough to get out of. All excusable. Greens rolled ok but some had recently been tined so a bit bumpy. BUT, this is a quality layout, and I'm sure will be in great nick again soon. Some very long par 4's given the conditions. Only one of our group of 38 made handicap! (And we're not hackers by any means.)

Don't forget your Driver
Deceptively long course, if you don't hit long then second shots into the green are 180+. Not a bad thing as it tests your driving. Greens very well paced, ball rolls lovely. Fairways patchy but thats the same everywhere this time of year. Bunkers could do with some work. A number of holes you have to drive over the previous green, can hold up play.We played twilight and the members refused to let a two ball through at any stage, sometimes we were on the tee with a four ball. Some work to be done here.
Staff very friendly, particularly the pro shop assistant. Bellisima.

The Colchester golf course was not as well looked after as I thought it would be but still a quality course. We had to play off lots of temporary tees which is always disappointing but nobody?s fault I guess. The weather hasn't been too bad up till now though.Reviewer Rating
