Ludvig Aberg Player Profile And What's In The Bag

By: | Mon 04 Sep 2023

Article Updated in November 2023

Ludvig Aberg continued his astonishing start to his professional career, shooting a final round of 61 to win the RSM Classic, the final event of the 2022-23 PGA Tour season.

The young Swede ended the week with an incredible 72-hole total of 29 under par at Sea Island Resort’s Seaside Course. Aberg's 253 total ties the lowest 72-hole total ever and his successive closing rounds of 61 were the lowest score over the final two rounds ever.

Canada’s Mackenzie Hughes was second, four behind Aberg.

Following his maiden PGA Tour success, the 24-year-old said: "I had some putts going in today and I am super happy. It is a privilege to be in this position and that is how I view it. This is what you dream of as a kid in the sport I love. To see myself win is really cool. To be in this position, I need to pinch myself in the arm.”

Aberg won the DP World Tour’s Omega European Masters back in September for his first professional win. On the PGA Tour this season he has had nine top-25 finishes in 12 events, including a trio of top 10s and a runner-up at the Sanderson Farms Championship.

Aberg's sole bogey in 72 holes came after he failed to get up and down at the par-3 12th in the final round.

Hughes did his best to stay with Aberg in the final round as the rest of the challengers fell by the wayside but the Canadian could not close the gap on the Swede.

Ludvig Aberg

Player Profile

Ludvig Aberg was born on October 31, 1999 in Eslov, Sweden, where he learnt to play golf.

He won the Swedish Teen Golf order of merit in 2016 and the leading individual at the European Boys Championship in 2017 and was a member of the winning team at the 2019 European Amateur Team Championship. He won the Fairhaven Trophy in 2017 and was third at the 2018 Junior Golf World Cup.

In 2019 he was runner-up at the African Amateur Strokeplay Championship.

In 2021 he won the Jones Cup invitational in Georgia and became Europe’s top-ranked amateur. He was runner-up at the 2021 European Amateur and made the cut at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship, a PGA Tour event. In 2022 Aberg was named the Ben Hogan Award winner as the best college golfer in the United States and he won it again in May 2023. He also made the cut at the 2023 Dubai Desert Classic and finished tied 24th at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

He turned professional in 2023 and gained full status on the PGA Tour by finishing on top of the national University Rankings, becoming the first player to earn this advantage. He was the world’s leading amateur at the time.

Aberg made his debut as a professional in June 2023 at the Canadian Open, where he made the cut and finished in a tie for 25th place. In July he finished in a tie for fourth at the John Deere Classic.

His first start on the DP World Tour came at the Czech Masters, where he also finished in a tie for fourth place after a final round 66.

He then went on to win the European Masters, a tournament he started in 186th place in the Race to Dubai and ranked 200th in the world. His win at Crane-sur-Sierre took him to 49th in the Race to Dubai.

And his incredible form has continued. The week after the Ryder Cup, Aberg finished in a tie for second at the Sanderson Farms Championship and followed it with a tied 13th at the Shriners Children’s Open and tied 10th at the World Wide Technology Championship. And he has now ended the 2023 PGA Tour season by winning the RSM Classic in only his 12th start on the PGA Tour, securing rookie of the year honours in the process.
