Olazabel Confirmed as Ryder Cup Captain
As reported back in December Jose Maria Olazabel has been confirmed as the new European Ryder Cup captain for the 2012 clash in Illinois.
The Spaniard, 44, has played in seven Ryder Cup's was confirmed as the man to lead Europe's defence on Tuesday.
Olazabel was hotly tipped for the role when Colin Montgomerie announced after his victory that he would be stepping down to concentrate on playing in the event at the Medinah Country Club. The appointment was a unanimous one from the Ryder Cup committee and Olazabel said it is the proudest moment of his career:
"The two Masters wins at Augusta National are the highlight of my playing career, but this is my proudest moment," said Olazabal.
"Golf has been my life and representing Europe in the Ryder Cup has given me so much enjoyment," he added.
"So to be named the European Ryder Cup captain is something very special and I am looking forward to the next 20 months before we reach Medinah. Without question the Ryder Cup has given me many memorable times."
World number one and European stalwart Lee Westwood welcomed the decision:
"He will bring leadership, experience and passion, and is going to be fantastic. When Jose Maria conducts a team talk or motivational talk, everyone listens."
The only concern was Olazabel's health after his long running battle with rheumatic pain but he is expected to play in the Abu Dhabi Championship which starts on Thursday and a lot more events in the lead up to the Ryder Cup.
European Tour chief executive O'Grady said: "He is an honourable, incredible man - I haven't heard one person who wouldn't love to see him as captain."
Davis Love is expected to be confirmed as Olazabel's counterpart on Thursday after Corey Pavin stepped down after Celtic Manor.
