How Much Does it Cost to Play The Best Golf Courses in Wales

By: | Wed 24 Apr 2024

International visitors flock to Scotland and Ireland to play golf each year, with an increasing number now stopping by the many incredible golfing regions of England. This demand can make things crowded and often expensive, but Wales offers an alternative that should be appealing for golfers from these islands and beyond.

There are around 180 courses located in the country, including a significant collection of spectacular links layouts that could easily find themselves ranked alongside the best that you see elsewhere.

But where should you consider playing and how much would it cost you?

We have brought together a group of the highest-rated courses in Wales and added their standard summer green fee, which demonstrates that there is greater value for money to be found here.

If you look even further, many of these destinations also offer twilight deals, meaning that you can play them for even less.

Should a golf trip to Wales be on your list for this season - and we would recommend it - here is the place to start!

Review Comment: "Wow! We were travelling to the North Wales area for a birthday and decided to book into Royal St David's. I had visited the area many times before and always wanted to play the course. It is long and tricky but very rewarding. In wind and heavy rain, I found it challenging but very rewarding. The course is in excellent condition and well worth the green fees paid."

Pyle & Kenfig Golf Club

Location: Bridgend, Mid Glamorgan

Golfshake Rating: 4.36

Green Fee: £100

Review Comment: "Perfect conditions made this ideal to play in while taking in the fantastic views around. Lots of breaks on the greens making them hard to read but weren’t as fast as expected. Highly recommend if you have the chance to play but cannot imagine how much harder it would be if the conditions aren’t benign."

Machynys Peninsula Golf Club

Location: Llanelli, Carmarthenshire

Golfshake Rating: 4.38

Green Fee: £75

Review Comment: "One of the best! Absolutely stunning course! It was in great condition, fairways and greens were brilliant. A great challenge for all level of golfer. Clubhouse and facilities were also excellent. Definitely recommend this course."

North Wales Golf Club

Location: Llandudno, Clwyd

Golfshake Rating: 4.24

Green Fee: £60

Review Comment: "I enjoyed the challenge of links conditions at North Wales Golf Club, including a steady wind off the Irish Sea. The back nine is definitely my favorite with holes 10, 11 and 12 situated along the coast requiring you to aim over the water and let the wind bring the ball back into play."

Bull Bay Golf Club

Location: Amlwch, Anglesey

Golfshake Rating: 4.17

Green Fee: £55

Review Comment: "By far the best course on the island. Greens very good, fairways well-maintained and there is evidence of further improvements being made. Not a long course until you visit in the wind! Reaching the first two holes in regulation is a challenge. Plenty of raised greens to test your wedge play. Hole 9 is great fun, featuring as it does a grassy ravine which you can opt to play from or over. The 18th drive has glorious drives of the rugged coast behind the clubhouse. If you come to North Wales do not miss this course from your trip."

Nefyn Golf Club (Old)

Nefyn Golf Club

Location: Pwllheli, Gwynedd

Golfshake Rating: 4.61

Green Fee: £65

Review Comment: "Superb, just my favourite golf course in Wales even if I played it with gale force winds! Course in fantastic condition, better than some of the local ones in summer!"

Llandrindod Wells Golf Club

Location: Llandrindod Wells, Powys

Golfshake Rating: 4.06

Green Fee: £50

Review Comment: "Our society played here in November when many other courses were waterlogged. We were lucky with the weather which was bright with only a very light breeze. The views were stunning from this upland course and I have never played on greens as good as these were for the time of year. As ever the turf was a joy to play off."

The Rolls of Monmouth Golf Club

Location: Monmouth, Gwent

Golfshake Rating: 4.59

Cardigan Golf Club

Cardigan Golf Club

Location: Cardigan, Ceredigion

Golfshake Rating: 4.22

Green Fee: £38

Review Comment: "I have a holiday membership here and absolutely love this course. It slopes, undulates and the wind affects your drives. It is a thinking course with the most spectacular views over the sea and mouth of the Teifi. Highly recommended."

Porthmadog Golf Club

Porthmadog Golf Club

Location: Porthmadog, Gwynedd

Golfshake Rating: 3.64

Green Fee: £50

Review Comment: "A tale of two nines. Front nine is heathland with water coming into play on some holes. Fairways were scorched and very hard with hardly a blade of grass in sight leading to some interesting bounces. The back nine was proper links with severe undulation, very tight lies, blind shots, run offs and lots of bunkers. Without a course planner it was often difficult to know what a good line was going to be off the tee but there were some outstanding views and the greens were fast and true."
