What Driver Head Loft do I need?

By: Sarah Ramowski | Thu 15 Jul 2010 | Comments ()

Guest post from Sanders Longdrive, Club Builder, Swing Coach and Long Drive competitor.

This depends on each player. Swing speed and angle of attack are very important considerations. So, for example, a skilled player may hit the ball between one and four degrees on the upstroke and thereby increase 'dynamic loft,'  that is how open the face truly is at impact. A player with a 'poor smasher' factor i.e. poor level of efficiency in converting swing speed into ball speed may possibly require more loft, particularly if his follow through is poor.

The following scale is purely a starting point guide, and assumes that the player has been correctly fitted with a top quality shaft:

Swing Speed Driver Head Loft Required
70mph 15d
75mph 15d
80mph 14d
85mph 13d
90mph 12d
95mph 11.5d
100mph 11d
105mph 10.5d
110mph 10d
115mph 9.5d
120mph 9d
125mph 8.5d
130mph 8d
135mph 7.5d
140mph 7d
145mph + 6.5d
