David Marshall![]() Handicap : 9.4 Location : ![]() Posts : | Posted : Wed 3rd Sep 2008 13:39 Just wondering if what I am going through now, has happened to anybody else. You see I have totally lost the enthusiasm to play golf...Ahhhh Shock horror.
I didn't play for just over 2 weeks before going to Gloucester, for the Golfshake Open. And I haven't even picked up a club since I got back. Not sure why this is happening...My wife keeps telling me to go out and play. And asks why I haven't been out....My friends ring me and ask me where I am, and when can I play.

Tim Hawkins![]() Handicap : 20.8 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Wed 3rd Sep 2008 13:58 After seeing you play at Gloucester I can see why, Dave! Seriously, it doesn't do you any harm to give it a bit of a rest in my experience. Coming up to the Gloucester event I'd had a weeks holiday, played the Thursday before we went at Lindrick, and once the week before that. For me that wasn't much and have only had one game since the Open. And I've played well for all of them so I think the rest has done me good, and playing on all new courses has also helped. It hasn't actually been a pleasant summer for getting out either. Just make sure you're up and running for the friendly comp. |
David Marshall![]() Handicap : 9.4 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Wed 3rd Sep 2008 14:06 You could be right Pat.....Although we haven't had too much rain at all down here...Just very windy...It may well be that because this summer has had so much foul weather my enthusiasm and enjoyment of the game has left me. For the time being anyway |
Pat Fitzsimons![]() Handicap : 19.9 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Wed 3rd Sep 2008 14:10 A few weeks ago my local course which is built in the Castlereagh Hills in Belfast, had a river running through it that wasn't there before, I kid you not, it was a fast flowing bloody river running from the 10th to the 18th, the weathers bunkers, but worse than that its very depressing ![]() |
John Pettitt![]() Handicap : 13.3 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Wed 3rd Sep 2008 14:14 Pull yourself together, Marshall, your event at South Winchester is proving popular, can't have you all depressed. |
David Marshall![]() Handicap : 9.4 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Wed 3rd Sep 2008 14:23 I know John....I'll pull myself out of it...I did go through a similar thing a few years back. But on that occasion I didn't play for 5 years...But that was because of moving house, work and a whole load of other reasons. Mind you, John....I expect you must be feeling a bit down too right now, with your knee operation, and you can't wait to get back out there! And Tim you are quite correct in what you say, on all counts. And I will be ready for the Friendly in a few weeks.. |

Jon T![]() Handicap : 10.9 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Wed 3rd Sep 2008 16:05 It's happening to me at the moment. I have a serious "can't be arsed" attitude when it comes to going to the range. I'm not a member of a club, so practicing my chipping and putting is a bit awkward, as I don't get any feedback from hitting rangeballs into a net a few yards away. The rain is a major issue, as it's demoralising. I'm demoralised. I'm playing on the 19th Sept at Siloth,a s I'd already agreed to play there, and heading straight home to watch the rest of the Ryder Cup. Maybe I'll feel better on Sunday evening/Monday morning, but who knows. I'm sharing your pain at least David!! |
Tony Dunn![]() Handicap : 18.6 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Wed 3rd Sep 2008 21:36 I really can't believe you lot specially you Mrs Marshall, although it may not feel like it out there it is summer.Look, you have to make the most of the warm-ish weather while you can, before the winter comes and you really can't get out, so get off your wrinkly bottom and get out there....... |
John Pettitt![]() Handicap : 13.3 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Wed 3rd Sep 2008 21:37 That's right, Tony, you tell him, he may listen to you. |
Pat Fitzsimons![]() Handicap : 19.9 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Wed 3rd Sep 2008 22:34 Thats all well and good Tony but even Noah would have problems where I am living, warm it may well be but wetsuits and flippers are the order of the day. |

Paul Williams![]() Handicap : 18.3 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Wed 3rd Sep 2008 23:32 ever heard the phrase " golfed out!" ? some off my peers use this, i'm finally starting to understand what it actually means: golfers of a good standard whom usually play alot, then play more often than usual, often resulting in loss of form! from my experience i maybe wrong. but i have experienced simular whilst playing during the holidays. i went from playing from 1-2 rounds a week, to four-five rounds a week! by the end of two weeks, my form/enthusiam for the great game had gone. after a few weeks lay-off everything was back to the norm..... slightly s..t! ha,ha! this may not have anything to do with your thread, but before i get the angry mob on my case, i'm just giving an example of what happened to me along the simular lines of your statement. |
Michael Noel![]() Handicap : 15.4 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Wed 3rd Sep 2008 23:37 Yeah, me too. I played 6 rounds at St. Andrews, 6 rounds at my favourite courses in the USA and the KClub in Ireland along a few other courses in Dublin all within the span of 6 weeks, June 17-July 31. And I've played once during the five weeks since. But alas, I'm going back to the USA in 36 hours and will be back on the courses by Saturday afternoon. |

Kevin Hewitt![]() Handicap : 10.6 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Thu 4th Sep 2008 09:50 Hi Pat, I empathize with you as the weather we have had in South Wales this year has been the worst that antone at my club can remember, even the older ones. I played in a league match last night in the worst conditions I can remember, but this was a match that has already been called off twice so we had to play it to a finish. Struggling with plugged lies if you are just off the fairway or the green - getting thoroughly soaked and having to dry out all of the clubs and wet-gear every time I go out is beginning to erode even my stubborn golfaholic tendencies. I now think that it really isn't worth going out in the torrential rain/showers any more, and as I look out now - its raining again!! I am really looking forward to the friendly at South Winchester so that I become accustomed to playing golf in dry conditions on proper greens again.

Wayne Santorini![]() Handicap : 15.3 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Thu 4th Sep 2008 11:16 Kevin the rain is going to be heavy in your area today in fact all over the SW including North Wales (going there this weekend to see the witch oops I mean Mother-in-Law ) |
Kevin Hewitt![]() Handicap : 10.6 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Thu 4th Sep 2008 12:02 Wayne - they have said that it will be heavy showers today, so far there have been two showers, one lasting 2 hours and another lasting 4 hours with a half-hours respite in between I'm considering paying the timber yard a vist this week-end to purchase some wood for my Ark |

Stuart Govan![]() Handicap : 14.2 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Thu 4th Sep 2008 22:12 Hasn't happened to me but don't worry David you will come back more enthusiastic and better than ever before. Just as long as it's not in the second week of February next year. |
Pat Fitzsimons![]() Handicap : 19.9 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Thu 4th Sep 2008 22:36 I think even Noah would have had serious problems with this amount of rainfall, worse still its starting to turn cold already and I haven't even had the chance to wear my new golf shorts and white Nike Golf trainers what a summer that was ! |
Jon Williams![]() Handicap : 25.9 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Sat 6th Sep 2008 00:05 Interesting posts on the frequency of playing golf. I generally play twice a week on a Monday evening/afternoon and Wednesday morning. Over the summer holidays this frequency changed. Most weeks |I didn't play at all but I had two periods of intese golf (four rounds in five days and three rounds in four). I found playing nearly everyday much less enjoyable even though over the whole six weeks I played less. I think the lack of enjoyment stemmed from not having enough time between rounds to think about what I did wrong and then coming up with fixes to try next time. The other problem is that the aches and pains soon build up playing everyday. I used to find when I did a lot of running that going out every other day was much more enjoyable and in the long run beneficial. |
David Marshall![]() Handicap : 9.4 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Thu 11th Sep 2008 15:41 Well....If a six week break from golf gives the kind of results I achieved today, then I am not going to play for 10 weeks next time and I might be a scratch golfer. A friend persuaded me to play today......Can't describe my game (for me at any rate), as anything other than awesome...Shot gross 76 with 30 putts hit nearly every fairway and green in regulation and my putting was on fire. Slow smooth rhythmical swing, chipping was perfect...The only thing that mucked me up a bit was a single double bogey, caused by being in a water filled bunker and not getting out with the first attempt..Had a couple of birdie chances which just literally stopped short by less than an inch.. Damn I love this game...Well....Sometimes anyway |

John Pettitt![]() Handicap : 13.3 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Thu 11th Sep 2008 18:32 I think he is after winning the money at South Winchester, Stuart, we will have to severely handicap him, now that he is playing to 4 handicap. |

David Marshall![]() Handicap : 9.4 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Fri 12th Sep 2008 08:09 I doubt that I will tell you about it sweetie......
I'm off for another game in an hour. And I expect I will be lashing at the ball again, trying to see if I can get an extra few yards, jabbing at putts and generally back to my old self. Yesterdays extravaganza was most probably a flash in the pan....I'll post todays score later on...Then you can have a good laugh. Oh and yes you are right...Defininitely a fair weather golfer...The sun is out hardly any wind today |
